Ld has been found in sperm. Now whether you can pass it to him, it is unknown. The pres of ILADS once told me that my husband and I can ping pong the disease. I assured him I had NO mind for "ping pong" in this agonizing pain, he said, "saliva". The jury is still out, but if I were him and Lyme free - I would not risk it. Let him know there is a possibility. You must consider this disease is similar to syphilis and how is syphilis passed, sexually.

Best wishes.

Good for you! Condoms. Always a safe bet. I don't think anyone with this disease would wish it on their worst enemy.

Also be aware never to give blood donations or organ donations even if you are well. Once Bb is in the body, we never know if it has been eradicated so be aware of these facts as well and don't commit to organ or blood donations.

Take care.

I know a doctor who believes she got Lyme from her mother (passed in the womb) and now her husband and two children have it. None of them have ever been bitten by ticks (that they know of). Maybe some people who are married/dating someone for a long time can chime in here and let us know what they think.

My doctor also told me that she had a patient test positive for Lyme - she called the CDC and asked them if it could be passed sexually. They said absolutely not and when she replied "Oh good, then I can still donate blood" they said "Absolutely do NOT donate blood" and they wouldn't expand on it. I'd say that it's a pretty good chance that it can be transmitted sexually. I've read many, many cases where whole families have it.

I just think that you should be cautious and do treat it like an STD. Sucks. I'm in your same boat - single and trying to figure out what this all means.

Yes, lyme disease can be passed between partners. this needs more research, but it can and does happen. LYme can also be passed from mother to children in the womb and even through breastfeeding. Lyme is vicious. I was very concerned about my family. I only found out that I had lyme after I already had my kids and did the good thing and breasst fed them. Breastfeeding is supposed to provide them with a strong immune system.. I didn't know I could be killing them. My husband and three children have been tested for Lyme, and by the Grace of God, they are not infected.

A researcher has shown that infected male mice can transmit Bb to the females and their offspring. There needs to be more research regarding humans, but in real life it does happen

A lady named Karen Vanderhoof-Forschner (cofounder of The Lyme Disease Foundation) is sure she passed it to her baby in the womb, the doctors dismissed her suspicions. Her son only lived from 1985-1991.

the "scientific " data on all of this is scarce. Just be safe.

Please do not take anything I say as medical advice. I am not a doctor

As far as I know all of these statements are true. BOY did you pick the tough one. Most doctors that are in the know completely believe that you can pass it though sex as well as in the womb and through breast milk. The interesting part is that they feel it is far more likely that a man would pass it to a woman because there is a larger amount of "fluid" exchange. But there is still a risk from woman to man. Things are slightly different from Lyme and AIDS because one is a bacterial and one is viral. Viruses are prolific in a small amount of fluid while bacteria is "hit or miss" in an amount of fluid. So if a said amount of fluid infected with Lyme is exchanged the chance is lower that there is enough bacteria in that sample to infect a person. It's kind of complicated, but hopefully that gives you a better idea. Keep in mind I am not a doctor, I was going to school for medicine but I do not have a degree, so you can choose to believe what I say or not.

I think the jury is still out on this one. No one has proven it yet via sex. I don't think they will for a long time. My god they don't even have a test yet that is 100% sure for lyme, so I don't think anyone can really tell us if we can pass it via sex just yet, maybe some day...

Actually, I'm relatively positive that they have documented cases of the disease being transferred sexually from man to woman. I don't necessarily agree with the methods and standards that they used to agree on this, but they did find it. One way or the other it is better to just assume yes then to take the chance of infecting someone.
