I am wondering about meat, You know those nasty Spirochetes burrow direcly into tissue and for sure Cattle get ticks along with Moose and Deer,Some people love rare steaks( i am one of them)also many local people here in New Brunswick and Maine eat plenty of Moose and Deer, does that transmission source make sense?

My husband bought breakfast sausages at our local grocer and when he started cooking them worms starting crawling out. Lots of white wiggly worms! I just laughed. I'm vegetarian.

Since then he's been eating all his meats wild or not, cooked through. Probably a good idea.

Transmission by MILK or food?

Most spirochetes (and other bacteria) ingested will probably be killed by the high acidic content in the stomach, but people with achlorhydria and newborns that have very low stomach acid production, does not have this protective barrier and might be at increased risk for getting infected by the oral route, if they ingest live spirochetes.

Pasteurizing the milk and never eat semi-raw meat - must be recommended as prophylaxis.

Borrelia burgdorferi: another cause of foodborne illness?

Farrell GM, Marth EH.

Int J Food Microbiol 1991 Dec; 14(3-4): 247-60 PMID: 1790102

Dairy cattle and other food animals can be infected with B. burgdorferi and hence some raw foods of animal origin might be contaminated with the pathogen. Recent findings indicate that the pathogen may be transmitted orally to laboratory animals, without an arthropod vector.

There seems to be some evidence that 'eating' a spirochete can transmit Lyme.

I think it might be rare------ and I especially think that the stomach acids would kill it. Seems I've read a lot about that. My opinion only.

OMG I'm sorry! I didn't mean to make anyone puke! We live in a small town, without much choice so who knows what goes on in there. It's certainly not a normal thing to happen! I've never heard of it before.

Oka so if I have Lyme (and I do) and it's in my saliva and my DD takes a sip off my cup... she could possible get it?

Great.

I'm an Advocate

Tickssuck,

I've heard that you can potentially pass it thru your saliva. However, I believe that the consensus appears to be that Lyme disease is really a lot like HIV/AIDS. There's still a lot that's unknown about it, but there's a good likelihood it can be sexually transmitted, potentially transmitted to children thru the placenta and thru breast feeding, but that more casual contact like kissing, drinking after one another, and the like is most likely not going to pass it on.

There's a lot of info out there, but also a lot of stuff that's still unknown. The passing thru saliva may be one of those gray areas, but from my understanding, that's probably an unlikely scenario you are describing.

Just because it's impossible doesn't mean it can't happen.

I'm not a doc, so anything I say is my opinion only. Nothing I say is meant as offense, I offer what I can as help. I believe in educating myself on all my medical issues and being my own advocate, for no one else with do that on my behalf. I recommend we all do the same!

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. Perhaps I truly am insane for expecting these docs to listen to me when I say the same things repeatedly to no avail? LOL. I am tired of seeking out new docs and getting the same result time and again...Forgive me if I seem bitter some days.

Something has changed within me/Something is not the same/I'm through with playing by/The rules of someone else's game/Too late for second-guessing/Too late to go back to sleep/It's time to trust my instincts/Close my eyes and leap...I'm through accepting limits/Cuz someone says they're so/Some things I can not change/But till I try I'll never know/Too long I've been afraid of/Losing love I guess I lost/Well if that's love/It comes at much too high a cost/I'd sooner buy Defying Gravity/Kiss me good-bye I'm Defying Gravity/I think I'll try Defying Gravity/And you won't bring me down...
