Can lyme cause psychological problems? My grandma's been living with Lyme half of her life, and was diagnosed about 15 years ago. She was always more or less a wreck, and since she started the treatment she's started to also have better days.

Lately she started to behave very oddly, her, that was always calm and pleasant, now she became aggressive, firstly in language, then even physically, she's very nervous all the time, and she slowly started to forget things and people.

One doc said it's dementia, another said it could be Alzheimer's, and our family doc said that it can also be from lyme.

Now that I found this place, with people that know more about lyme than the average people do, I'd like to ask if lyme can also give mental issues and change somebody's behaviour almost completely. Lyme alone?

Don't know which way to go, who to listen to. She's 70, but she's strong and she can fight.

Thanks for listening.

You bet it can cause mental difficulties. Forgetfullness, anger, mood swings, etc. The lyme spirochettes can cross the blood brain barrier and infect the brain centers that control emotions, memeory, etc. Bartonella {along with lyme} is a common tick co-infection that is noted for causing many mental difficulties. It can often take a long time to treat as abx needs time to cross into these area's. The die-off when the abx does hit the bacteria can cause a host of problems as well.

Hi there,

Check out Dr Brian Fallon's work. He is a member of ILADS and works out of the Columbia Lyme Disease Research Center.

I have spoken to the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill, and requested that the include a resource to rule out Lyme disease, because it causes ALL of the psychological diagnosis'.

Take care,

Leslie

YES!!! It most definately can cause all kinds of mental problems. I've dealt with horrible mood swings angry out bursts, black outs, you name it. It has gotten really bad since i started antibiotics. Just hang in there.
