Y'all have taught me a new word: "co-infection".

I looked up "Babesia" and found Melissa Kaplan's

<http://www.anapsid.org/Lyme/symptoms/tbi-symptoms.html>

[and she credits _Diagnostic Hints And Treatment Guidelines For Lyme And Other Tick Borne Illnesses_, by Joseph J. Burrascano Jr., M.D. (Fourteenth Edition, November, 2002. ]

For Babesia, she lists:

Babesia is a protozoan spread by ticks, blood transfusion, and in utero. Despite there being 13 known forms to date, current testing only looks for two of them.

Air hunger

Cough

Fatigue

Fevers

Headache

Hemolysis

Imbalance without true vertigo

Mild encephalopathy

Shaking chills

Sweats

I had to look up two of them up (Macintosh dictionary):

Hemolysis: the rupture or destruction of red blood cells. Also called hematolysis.

Imbalance without true vertigo [Ah! That's better than my "dizzy but not exactly dizzy".]

Mild encephalopathy: a disease in which the functioning of the brain is affected by some agent or condition (such as viral infection or toxins in the blood).

------------------

A couple of folks on here have mentioned that /this/ is curable, so my questions are:

1. What is the test for it;

2. What treatment is generally used

and

3. If all else goes satisfactorily, how long does it take to be "cured"?

Many thanks / Gray /

It is diagnosed clinically. Treatment: Mepron, Zithromax and Artemisia.

Quinine and Cleocin is very toxic. Continue for 2 to 4 months. It is related to malarial. Most patients have cyclic symptoms which are flu like with low grade fever and chills. If Lyme doesn't get better it should be treated.

I am a family doctor in Germantown Maryland. I have been treating Lyme for several years and have treated between 500 and 1000 patients. I am learning all the time. I don't claim to have all the answers. I answer questions because I want to help people. Everything about this disease is controversial. I want to write a book which will be a patient guide to Lyme, so questions from patients are helpful to me.

Here is a list of co-infection symptoms: http://tinyurl.com/642l45

Igenex tests for them, but they may or may not show up. Over 60% of those with LD have co-infections.

A good LLMD can determine co-infections - although they are very difficult to figure out because they cross over with lyme symptoms so much.

Babesia is traditionally treated with Zith/Mepron. Artemisinin by Allergy Research is what my LLMD uses for natural Babs treatment: http://www.iherb.com/ProductDetails.aspx?c=1&pid=3484&at=0

There are now other natural babesia treatments available as well. Artemisia is similar but not the same Artemisinin is what you want if you don't want to treat with zith/mepron which I will warn you can be very rough, but effective.
