Hi Cindy,

how about sharing what you've found out after finding the right link?

Roy,

This is interesting regarding testing:

I copied it directly from the site.

With most infections, your immune system first forms IgM antibodies, then in about 2 to 4 weeks, you see IgG antibodies. In some infections, IgG antibodies may be detectable for years.

Because Borrelia burgdorferi is a chronic persistent infection that may last for decades, you would think patients with chronic symptoms would have positive IgG Western blots.

But actually, more IgM blots are positive in chronic borreliosis than IgG. Every time Borrelia burgdorferi reproduces itself, it may stimulate the immune system to form new IgM antibodies.

Some patients have both IgG and IgM blots positive. But if either the IgG or IgM blot is positive, overall it is a positive result.

Take care

Cindy

Roy,

I also thoght this was very provoking:

Unfortunately, many patients are told they do not have borreliosis because they do not meet CDC’s surveillance criteria.

Surveillance criteria exclude some of the classic hallmark antibodies, such as the 31 kDa band (outer surface protein A or ospA) and the 34 kDa band (outer surface protein B or osp.

In fact, the 31 kDa band is so tightly associated with Lyme borreliosis that a vaccine was made from that outer surface protein.

In other words, I believe that criteria that exclude the ospA (31 kDa) band should not be used to tell a patient they do not have Lyme borreliosis.

Common sense should tell anyone that prevalent antibodies like the 31 dKa and 34 dKa should be included in the criteria, not excluded

What the above means to us is that the medical world knew that the Band 31 dKa is related to Lyme disease so tightly that they made a vaccine from it but the CDC does NOT include Band 31dKa in termining a positive or negative western blot test??? WHY?? Can anyone answer that?

Basically - the authot of the link thinks the test for Lyme is worthless without this band represented????

I agree.

Just something to think about as we so desperately need accurate testing for Lyme!

Cindy
