Hello out there. Some quick questions on some blood test out there. Vitamin D2 and CD57. What is the thought process on VitD2 levels? High vs low? I know in a conventional situation, High is always best for Vitd. But for Lyme, I heard that VITd2 attracks the little spiroketes and they have a feast on it. My numbers came back seriously low, they believe it is due to the lyme. I just want to hear what is out there...

Also, CD57. THis came back very low, 20 infact. I am being treated until this number is back in the 60's. thoughts?

I was recently diagonosed and couldnt be more happy. Things seem like they are heading in the right direction.

There is a controversy around Vit D2. You can read about it in a book called "Top 10 Lyme Disease Treatments" by Brian Rosner. You might be able to find some info on it in one of his websites.

Rigely,

CD57 cells are called "natural killer cells". You want to have lots of these when you are fighting an infection. If you don't, then you are considered to be immuno-compromised, or your immune system is weakened. Lyme can depress the immune system quite dramatically. A Lyme literate doctor will take a reading on these before beginning treatment, and will look at them during treatment to make sure they are going up. This is a good indicator that you are making progress with your treatment. And yes, the idea is to get them up to the normal levels.

As for Vitamin D, you have two types, active and inactive.

Inactive Vitamin D is what you take in through your diet and exposure to the sun. Active Vitamin D is what your body converts for immune function and fighting diseases and infections. This is done through the liver and kidneys.

When you are healthy, you have a balance of inactive versus active. When you are fighting an infection, the balance is off. To fight an infection, your body needs lots of active Vitamin D, and with this, you will often find your inactive Vitamin D numbers to be very low. All you need is to make sure you take a Vitamin D supplement to help get the inactive numbers up, because your body is converting it quicker than you can take it in.

I speak from experience on this, because my numbers have been, and still are, off balance. I take 2000IU of Vitamin D each morning. My CD57 cell number has moved up only 5 points since I started treatment last August. But hey, it's moved up, and that's the key.

Tom
