MDJunction to me

"MDJunction to me is a life saver... when i first was diagnosed with Scheuermann's Disease i wrote a message to a page i found on google, hoping that they could help me.... you'd never know it but that weird feeling (you know that one where it feels like someone actually cares) came over me when i opened my email next day to find that someone on the other side of the world (at the American Medical Library)had read my message while i was sleeping, and there low and behold was the address to MDJunction.... well it is everything to me, i live it breathe it and love it!!!!! I have found many people who are struggling with similar issues banding together to help each other. It is the best place in the world, and i couldn't think of another place to go to meet so many lovely people....

My wife has just been diagnosed with lyme disease and is suffering from excruciating headaches, which have been unresponsive to excedrin migraine. Does anyone have a recommendation for an OTC analgesic which actually has been effective against lyme headache? Her antibiotic is doxycycline.

Thanks !

Hi Bobcamshaf,

I had clobbering headaches, too. Has your wife been tested for coinfections, too???

OTC headache rememdies were like eating candy for me...they did NOTHING to relieve the pain. Has your wife tried any of the prescription migraine meds? There are so many now. I used to take Relpax, 40mg. That would take the edge off and sometimes the headache would even go away, at least for a little while .

Please do not take anything I say as medical advice. I am not a doctor.

Thanks, ConnieD -- the infection is quite recent and we just got the initial diagnosis yesterday, so we haven't tried anything or tested for coinfections yet. Appreciate the recommendation.

Wow, somebody was paying attention!!!Good for you that her infection was found early. She should have an excellent chance of recovery.

How long is she going to be on antibiotics?? I hope it's more than ten days. It needs to be at the very least two to four weeks.

Is she being treated by an LLMD?

Is she on probiotics? did the doctor give you any advice on how to keep her healthy while she's on these antibiotics?? Probiotics are a must and can be found at a health food store. Take on an empty stomach. They are ususally capsules. I take florastor and prescript assist. We don't want your wife getting a yeast infection, systemic or otherwise.

Feel free to ask any questions. THere are a lot of knowledgable people on this board. We are all helping each other. That's what it's all about.

Peace,

Connie

I'd typed more but lost the post so this is much shorter and to the point. I never really had any luck with migraine meds. They're expensive and either wouldn't work or I'd build up a resistance quickly. The best I found to help was to take prescription NSAIDs and when it was really unbearable I would take a benedryl and lay in a dark quiet room (like with migraines) and have a cool wet cloth over my eyes. I found that did a lot to get me through until the treatment started taking care of it.

Thanks again, Connie D.

Yes, we caught it early. Saw the rash last week, and when she had unusual fatigue, went it to see the doc right away. We're in a lyme-infested region and two of our dogs have already had lyme, so we pay attention. 30 days of antibiotic. Sorry, but I'm new to this board and not up to date on all the jargon. Don't know what an LLMD is, we're seeing our local general practitioner (HMO gatekeeper, no choice....), and haven't gone to a specialist yet. Also Idon't know what a probiotic is...?

Something I forgot. There are some vitamins and minerals I take to help with the headaches and migraines. It's not enough to stop the pain but I can tell a huge difference if I don't take them now. I take b complex vitamins (with b12) and magnesium and co q-10.

Probiotics are the good bacteria like that in your stomach and intestines. Antibiotics kills all the bacteria in your body both good and bad and so the good have to be replaced. You can get enough though by eating cultured dairy products like yogurt and acedophilus milk.

LLMD is a lyme literate doctor and there are some who will work with your primary care doc over the phone.

Yes you can take the vitamins right away. It's also good to take a good multivitamin or daily vitamin and you can take water soluble vitamins along with it like vitamins b and c. I have also tried bath soaks. You can get a bag of epsom salts at walmart (just a few dollars a bag) and soak in a warm bath with 2-3 cups of salts for 30 minutes. I always found it to be a great stress reducer especially with music and helped me sleep. Some people add things in with it and for a couple dollars more you can get a bag of scented epsom salts (still at walmart or any drug store but scented are in the bath a beauty section instead of the pharmacy). I hope some of this helps.
