I was curious to find out if any of the members on this board have had children post lyme diagnosis. My husband and I sort of had an ooops last week, and I am not late yet, but now am in that worried stage of waiting.

I will do some more research on this but was wondering if any one had any advice, or words to ease my concerns.

Thanks.

Jen

I hope you all are feeling well. I posted last on Reiki treatments. I have gone to 2 and they do help with the pain.

I just found out 2 weeks ago that I'm pregnant. I've been researching quite a bit and have talked to quite a few mothers with Lyme. What I'm finding is that it's a crap shoot. Pardon the term. No breast feeding for me!

Connie sent me a link that was interesting...

Hey Jen,

I had three healthy children all while infected with Lyme and coinfections(I was misdiagnosed as arthritis, slipped discs, etc). I only found out I had Lyme 3 YEARS after my last child was born. By the Grace of God, they are not infected. I breastfed them, too...for a year( well, okay...the third kid I only BF for about 8 months...I was ready and so was she). It's more dangerous to have a baby when you haven't been treated for Lyme. At least, that's my understanding.

Where are you in your recovery from Lyme?

I guess , really, first you need to know if you're pregnant or not before we start all the worrying.

Keep us posted.

I'm sure others will chime in soon on their experiences.

Please do not take anything I say as medical advice. I am not a doctor

You can read my posts. What we are going through with our 2.5 yr old

I went into preterm at 30 weeks. They injected me with terbuline...which made me halicinate for 3 days. After I left the hospital, I stopped taking the drugs that basically put me in a LSD trip and made my baby kick like crazy. I kept dilating and by the time I hit 38 weeks I went in to get induced because I was so swollen...my feet couldn't even fit mens shoes! I went from 125 to over 200 pounds and most of it was water. They had to check me all hours for blood clots. I didn't have precamsia either which usally causes this. The Dr's were really baffled and could never tell me why I was so swollen. As soon as I delivered she had breathing issues. As soon as she stabalized I BF her and she threw up all over me. I finally gave her a bottle cuz everyone said my weird vegetarian diet didn't agree with the baby. We tried every type of formula and she puked every feeding until about 13 months then it was just every night and once in the morning. Dr couldn't figure it out. At one point the talked about a feeding tube. She had low weight. She cried from the pain of GERD and didn't sleep through the night until recently at 2.5 years. Thanks to neurotin for the pain..RLS. After one month of abx she stopped puking.

It has been a tough road, but that was because we didn't know she had lyme. I knew that my illness and her illness were somehow related even though we had different symptoms. After reviewing all my med rec and her med rec I had it narrowed down. I found a great Dr after months of researching and we put all the pieced together.

My DD is the best thing that has ever happened to me. She helped me find out what was causing my illness. Now we are healing together.

For me, I will not ever have another child because I don't want them to experience all this pain too. For me, it would be wrong. Also, I only really wanted a little girl! I good with one!

However, you already know you have Lyme so you are way ahead of the game from where I was. You know it may cause preterm, and GERD, and pain and can effect sleep. If your new baby has any symtpons then you can start treating them. You need to find a PEdi who will treat lyme and test them. Then again your baby could be perfectly fine! I would not BF!!! I would also keep track of all your syptoms and the babies...It's tough figuring out is it Lymes or just normal baby things?

Congrats! If you are that is!!!!

Clayton: Congrats on your little one too! I hope they don't get it!!! But if they do you will be the best mom because you know how to handle the diease!

Pregnancy and Lyme is an interesting thing. From what I have read and heard from patients is that it can go one of two ways. In many cases when a women with lyme gets pregnant they become like miraculously healed for 9 months. They have no symptoms and life is good. In some cases though pregnancy completely destroys the woman's body and they feel like death all through the pregnancy. From what I understand the lyme can be transfered both in vitro and through breast feeding. I have not seen enough research on the subject regarding whether being on a treatment during pregnancy will lower the rate of transmission like with HIV. I am confused by the mothers who have lyme that say that their children don't have it.. couldnt the case actually be that it is dormant or that the test was faulty just like with the millions of tests that we take everyday that are false positives and negatives. There are also doctors that say that a baby forms its own blood supply so there is no way that it can get lyme from the mother, but there are dozens of diseases including HIV, hepatitis and syphilis that are transferred everyday, why would Lyme be any different? The placenta is built off of your body and your blood in my mind common sense tells you that the bacteria can easily make it's way to the baby. My doctors have questioned for years whethor I may have active bacteria in my uterus that causes many of my feminine problems, so that puts a whole different spin on it. What if the bacteria is living in the uterus before the baby even got there? The only other tidbit that I am aware of that I'm not sure if it is statistically proven or not, but I have seen a higher level of Miscarriage amongst women who have lyme disease, but as I said I do not know if it is actually statistically higher than the rest of the population. Good luck

My children were tested, (not with labwork), and they were negative. It could be dormant, though. So, I know what to watch for and know where to take them if they develop Lyme at some point. I pray for their health every day.

LD sucs, I had a similar pregnancy....with my third kid, I always had a lot of fluid and my BP hovered around normal to high during the entire pregnancy, then at the 36th week, I ballooned up to 200 pounds, too! My prepregnancy wt was 102!!! My BP skyrocketed to 200/100 and they delivered the baby (supposed to cure all that...make BP decrease and make water come off). That didn't happen. It was a nightmare. I've posted it before. It is a miracle I don't have a lyme baby....at least not yet. PLUS, I breastfed. They said she was 'allergic' to my breastmilk, too. So, I bottlefed her for a week or two, then back to breastfeeding. Weird. I'll have to really watch my girls. They will know the signs to look for , even as they grow and become responsible for themselves.

I don't mean to be a Debbie Downer, but it looks the odds of getting Lyme are increasing every day (just from being outside). At least, we all know what to do and signs and symptoms to look for.

Please do not take anything I say as medical advice. I am not a doctor

I spoke with Dr. J (pediatric lyme specialist). He told me that if the mother goes on antibiotics several months before she gets pregnant and stays on them throughout the entire pregnancy that the chance of her giving lyme to her baby is very minute. Also, he suggests having the placenta and umbilical cord blood sent to a lab for testing right after the baby is born just to be sure. If it is positive for lyme, the baby is treated right away and most likely will be fine. I don't believe that breastfeeding is recommended, though.

I just wanted to let you all know that I lost a child back in 1998. I was infected with the Lyme bacteria in 1995. When I was pregnant, I felt awful. I was running fevers off and on, shaking all over, aching everywere even worse than when I wasn't pregnant. I did not have a Miscarriage, I had a fetal demise. I went in for the first appt. when they check for a heart beat, and there wasn't any. I had to have an ultrasound, and it confirmed what they thought was happening, the baby died. I just knew in my heart what had happened even before the ultrasound. I just told the Dr. that for how I was feeling, how could the baby handle all of it, but at the time, I thought that I had Lyme, but nobody would put it all together, and the Dr.'s would not believe me with all the negative tests that I had. I did not have a DNC. I talked to my home town Dr. to see him as a second opinion to do something natural if I could cause I was scared of having a DNC. I was afraid that I would be one of the unlucky ones and cause so much scar tissue, that I could never get pregnant again. He put me on the strongest amount of Pitocin they had ever given somebody for 5 days, to try and put me into labor. This wasn't working. So he put me on a drug called Cytotec for bleeding ulcers. Apparently if you take this drug and you don't know that you are pregnant, that it causes miscarriages in women within 24 hours. That is what happened finally to me. It was extremely painful. I literally thought I was going to die from that drug. Plus, I told the Dr. that I could feel everything he was doing, removing the placenta and the fetus. He would not believe me, and would not give me stronger pain meds. To me this was a nightmare that I still live over and over because how it all happened. I know the baby was totally infected, because I am totally infected. I know in my heart that it was not meant to be. God gave me the peace to handle this when I first heard that there was no heart beat. I just knew it wasn't meant to be for me. I pray for all of you that are trying to get pregnant or are pregnant, as you go through this knowing you are infected. I have seen "Under Our Skin", and for all of you that have not seen this yet, the part that this one woman that lost many babies, just made me ball. It reminded me of what I went through. I am not trying to make you all sad, I'm sorry if I did, I guess I am and have had to face the reality of what happened to me. I know that there are many that have had children even though they are infected. I know that I could not even think of having a child right now at 38, because I think literally with how I am feeling, it could possibly make me even more ill or worse. I hope you all have very good Dr.'s to monitor your pregnancies, especially if they understand that you are infected with this Bacteria. I hope and pray for all of you that are going through this! You are the strong ones. I just don't think I could go through it again. I wish you all the best, and now you know what happened to me. Luvdtoteeup.
