Can any one tell me if they have balance issue with lyme. My husband is on bicillin shots and he was doing good for 12 days now he is slowly slipping backwards again. But even on his better days his balance was 50 % worse and is noticing problems with his right side, doing side to side motions like brushing his teeth.(like he can't control it) This started the day after is 3 shot. can this be normal? any advice?

Hi Aunt Sissy,

Can't really give you any advice, but I can tell you that my son has balance issues. Don't know if your husband's could be related to the meds or not, maybe somebody else can help more.

Good luck!

Ann

I know I've had a lot of problems with balance and have been teased a lot for walking like I'm drunk. Not so noticeable on good days but bad days I'll actually start going sideways when I'm trying so hard to walk straight and have paths around the house with things I can lean on. Loved it when my mom got a new living room set that's all padded and has nice high backs and arm rest to lean on walking. I've been told it should go away and found sometimes it helped to get more sleep or even experiment. I found when I have days that my balance is worse if I drink a lot more water and just take things slow it helps. These things have gotten better with treatment though so stay hopeful!

I'm on my third month but I responded well when they found something I'm not resistant to.

I too had /have balance problems-vertigo

Chirpractic adjustments help a lot!!!

Often in the morning I wake up and will favor walking to one side and i will also sway side to side while standing doing things.

It got better after being on meds, I was on Cipro for 3 months

The chiropractor really helps the most!!!!

I would tell the Dr. about the ongoing balance problems but it might not get better until more treatment is done for the lyme. There are clinics that specialize in balance problems, maybe your Dr. can refer you to one.

Good luck and take care, Denise

balance vertigo etc can all be from Lyme OR Bart, a good neuro can hopefully sort it out--Id get a good evaluation--so if it gets worse or changes youll have someone familiar with your case

Also have them check for Chiari and dysautonomias--all related to nervous system but all neuros wont know a lot about ANY of these--we have had to seek subspecialists and superspecialists and yet its neuro for Petes sake

try a Chiari website ( The Chiari Institute NY) and www.ndrf.org for dysauto for info about sx and tests and Drs

its very hard if not impossible to tell what sx are from the drugs or from a temporary worsening of sx ( a good thing IF it means youre on right track--often a no response is the worst) or even that the illness is worse because the drugs not working--sigh

hang in and time often sorts it out--dont be surprised if this waxes and wanes --mine gets better/worse but unfortunately hasnt totally left in a few yrs

before a balance rehab can be done you have to know what it IS--can be inner ear or central ( brain) or both--tests arent fun but necessary

start keeping a sx diary--what sx and when and rate them 1-10 10 being worst ever...and then over time you may see a pattern related to drug dose and timing or over time since taking a drug/treatment--this will be very helpful for the Drs.

also try to have him sleep in a recliner with head wedged with pillows--in a "neck neutral" position--as if he is looking straight ahead, chin parallel to floor while standing and not jutting out or back, spine aligned with neck--if he doesnt accidentally slump down or creak his neck overnight this may ease the balance--helps me!! and eased my horrid vertigo-but it took a lot to get used to sleeping this way ( I was a side sleeper)

careful with chiropractors until you know chiari status--a good chiro will admit they shouldnt touch a chiari neck at ALL!! and an "adjustment" can make balance worse if there is nerve inflammation to inner ear ( common)

JESSICA:

IF salt and water intake affect your balance you may have Mennierre's--an inner ear fluid balance issue that unfortunately gets worse and has no cure and few treatments-- not due to Lyme but coincidental and makes it all worse

they say to diagnose--if you eat a salty snack like a bag of chips with little water and then get a "spell" of off balance or dizzies ( or even a drop attack where you lose ALL balance and feel as if youre falling or being pushed to ground--I had a few NOT fun) then its positive.

good luck

Finette

They did some MRIs and lot of it is in my head and neck. There's some dark spots on my brain from history of headaches and migraines (before treatment I had migraines constantly) and the arthritis in my neck was causing inflammation and nerves being pinched off as well as a tone of other things having to do with my spine and nerves. Drinking water helps me with dizziness because I have a hard time with blood sugar due to PCOS.

So the times I have problems with balance I mostly just have to take things slow and figure out which problem is causing it at that time. I've learned pretty quickly to listen to my body though and can usually tell whats going on. It's helped a lot though with the pinched nerves now that I take Naprosyn and use an NSAID ointment on my neck and back of my head.

Thanks, he has a neor, doctor but does not believe in lyme. He also sees a LLMD. he has had about 7 MRI all together and nothing has ever shown up. LLMD thinks the balance issues are getting worse because the meds are killing off the lyme stuff.. He has to be carefull how he sleeps because he getts shocks in his head when his head in possitioned a certain way.
