My daughter has developed thrush and a vaginal yeast infection, I am sure of it. Was just given a break from an intense dose of antibiotics for her lyme and co infections because of unbearable herxing (stabbing pains). She had a nice break and is ready to go back into treatment slowly starting today, however, has developed candida. I got some antifungal cream and she continues to take "culturelle" 2x daily as she did from the start of treatment. Should i be mixing in some other probiotics?? What about an oral rinse? I will call Dr R our Lyme doctor today, but sometimes it takes awhile for him to get back to me. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Probiotics are a must for someone on antibiotics (esp. for women).

I would at least start with that until you talk to your doctor. I've never had to do an oral rinse so I don't know anything about it.

I'm sorry for your daughter having to deal with all that. Even if she's not talking abx, probiotics are good for us to take daily. I'm on them and I don't take abx. Great for digestion!

What about her diet? Complete avoidance of sugar including fruit and fruit juices. When in an acute stage of Candida, avoid alcoholic beverages, cheeses, dried fruites and peanuts. Eliminate items made from white flour. Use only raw apple cider vinegar, avoid other vinegars:avoid mayo, soy sauce or salad dressings; substitute fresh-squeezed lemon juice for vingegar.

Also, digestive enzymes are an integral part of a successful yeast management program. Look for products that contain lysozyme, protease, cellulase, hemicellulase, amylase, invertase, lactase, lipase, glucoamylase.

This was from an article I picked up at the health food store several months ago. My neice had chronic yeast infections, so I was interested in learning about Candida.

The article was from essential Health Magazine. I'm sure you could find some info on the internet, too.

I'm sorry your daughter is suffering with this. My middle child developed thrush in her throat after too many antibiotics. The doctor gave her diflucan (I think). She was only 6 at the time and I knew nothing about probiotics back then.

I hope your daughter gets some relief soon.

PS: My ND also likes to rotate my probiotics every 30 days or so. ( To make sure you get a good mix of the good bacteria in your gut. )

I agree with everything Lymie is saying. You really have to adjust your diet when dealing with Candida. Also, killing Candida can cause herxing. I had pains in my legs from the die off ---

she can also take diflucan. I was reading in Buhner's book, who is pro natural, that he did a study of lymies that weren't getting better, and they did diflucan and symptoms improved. I've just recently gotten on this one as I've read it's one of the only ones to help with systemic yeast.

That's the problem, we don't have to just worry about a "female" yeast infection, but it can go systemic, meaning EVERYWHERE, and can be aweful. Symptoms can even be VERY similar to LD.

I'm so sorry she's having to deal with this Betsy.

If she is having that much of a breakout of candida, you need to get her on either Diflucan, Nystatin or even Lamisil. These are all antifungals taken orally. She can use a regular hydrocortosone cream vaginally to help with the itch until these things start to kick in. It is also important to where all cotton underwear during this time and she also should take a supplement called milk thistle if she starts taking any of these antifungals becuase they can be hard on the liver. Keep in mind that I am not a doctor, I am simply speaking from experience because I have had these same problems since I was just little.

You have to make sure that the yogurt has "active cultures" in it, which most do these days.
