The researchers at UT Southwestern Medical Center have found that Lupus patients may benefit from a drug used to prevent organ-transplant rejection (an analog of Rapamycin). The research done on Lupus-prone mice revealed that the drug blocks a key biochemical process in their defective immune cells. This is an important discovery, and can lead to a whole new approach on Lupus treatment, if it's found to work on humans as well.

The drug hasn't been tested on humans yet, though, and this will be the next step of the study. If it works on human subjects, this research can be the key to an efficient Lupus treatment (so far, there isn't any known cure for Lupus, and the existent treatments bring along a pathology of their own...).

Here's an explanatory article: http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/79827.php

Let's wait, see, and hope...

Anybody has some input, or knows of any other Lupus studies and experimental drugs?

I recently read an article on the NIH website that discussed the use of stem cells in mice . It was a promising study that brought an end to the antibodies that destroy cells in lupus patients.

My boyfriend's grandpa recently sent me an article on a stem cell study for lupus patients as well...definately not gonna get too excited yet but wow wouldn't it be great if we could get a new treatment? Especially since there has been no new treatment for lupus approved by the FDA in over 40 years?!?!?

I totally agree! But one promising thing is that scientist are looking at older drugs and finding new uses for them which is giving us hope too. The drug Imuren, which I am taking, is not FDA approved for lupus, but drs are using it instead of Prednisone. It's working for me. It's a drug given to transplant patients to suppress immune systems, which is what we need. So, they can use it for duel purposes. Lucky us. Only new drugs have to be FDA approved. Old drugs can be used for a new purpose without having to go back through FDA trials. Thank Goodness!! Don't you think?
With peace and Hope,

Absolutely. I didn't mean to forget about the old drug new purpose thing. Thanks for bringing that up...I just wish the search for the "right one for me" (not just me but all of us) wasn't so hard

Wishing you a pain free day,

Kaitlan
