My mom has recently been diagnosed with Lupus. I can't believe all of the side effects that go along with the meds you all have to take. If you dont mind, could you share what meds you are on and why your dr prescribed them for you? I know she is on methotrexate, prednisone, Plaquenil, and tons more too.. but she seems a lot sicker since she started taking the Lupus meds. Thanks in advance!

These are typical meds for fighting lupus. If her disease has "stabilized," she may be suffering the side-effects, which aren't pleasant.

In addition to Lupus, I have myasthenia gravis and Graves' disease, to name a few systemic and autoimmune illnesses. I'm guessing your mother's med cabinet looks like mine: a pharmacy.

Seriously, the side effects of these medications can be worse than the treatment; but not all people suffer all the side effects; and do so to different degrees.

Due the myasthenia, I cannot take Plaquenil (contraindications), so my immunomodulating drug is Imuran. I take Medrol (a corticosteroid, like prednisone), thyroid HRT, Protonix, Neurontin, Mestinon, and a host of other drugs.

There are sites on the web where you can look up the medications and learn about their effects and side-effects.

I believe the Physicians' Desk Reference is online (try http://www.pdr.org)

Was your mother recently diagnosed? How is she doing?

Sending blessings your way,

P.S. I was dx'd in 2001 and am treated by a rheumatologist, who in turn works in tandem with my neurologist and PCP.

Thank you for the website. I found it very helpful. She had a really bad flare yesterday, and luckily it was the day she had an appt with a new family doctor. She had a terrible migraine, so he gave her a shot for it, and also a steroid shot, I can't remember the name. They did a slew of bloodwork also. The drs office called her last night worried about her. Her white cell count was through the roof. It was at 26,000 and normal is between 5 and 10,000. She is basically starting all over with new doctors b/c her old ones had given up on her, or that's what it seemed like. He gave her a blood pressure pill for her Reynaud's and some Topomax and Cymbalta too. Yes she could start a pharmacy with all of her meds. I hope this doctor can get her to the right doctors and together they can help my mom. We have no idea what to think at this point.

I take a bunch of meds too. It's all about finding a balance between the disease and the side effects.

Some of my meds are

Effexor XR

Plaquenil

Armour Thyroid

Nexium

Zyrtec

Flexeril

Pain meds-3

Toprol XL

testosterone supplement

liquid sleep medication= blech

and tons of vitamins as I'm deficient due to my stomach problems.

If I'm taking everything I'm supposed to- I'm taking over 25 pills a day plus a liquid, nose spray and transdermal.
