Do SPFS that are higher then 30 work? Does 60 or 80 work better then lower numbers? Some are asking this question as I too wanted to know.

So here is the scoop from Doris Day MD In Dermatology: Says Yes they do work slightly better if used properly. Let me Explain SPF 15 Blocks 93% of UVB rays, SPR 30 shields 97%, and SPF 50 fends off 99%(SPF Measures only UVB protection so scan labels for terms like "UVA/UVB protection"or "broad-spectrum protection" to ensure your sunscreen also guards against UVA rays)the diffrence between these numbers may seem small, but it can be significant for people who are sensitive to the sun(fair -skinned prone to skin cancer or people like us with Lupus should choose a sunscreen with the HIGHEST possiable SPF. Every one else should look for photostablized(meaning the UV filters dont break down as rapidly)formulas no matter what the SPF. The one they suggestes are the best for us are [/b]Coppertone, Aveeno,Neutrogena, and Banana Boat Another tip was this I read...

Up your defenses with topping sunscreen with mineral makeup which is rifle with ray blocking zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. Do a search Engine on "Lupus makeup" there is a sweet young girl that has her own line( She has Lupus) a wonderful makeup that covers Lupus rash with High SPF. I don't get mine very bad so I can get away with the cheaper Mineral Make up. I hope this helps my buddies as much as it does me.

I got my info from :Health Mag.

Peace out!

Nicole Paxson is the name of the young girl with Lupus and her new makeup line. I'm not selling this!! I have never used it myself but it may be a good sight for sisters with Lupus butterfly rash that is hard to cover. I found it searching for Lupus info.

Peace out my butterfly friends

I was wondering how you know for sure if you are sun sensitive with lupus. I have been avoiding the sun and I'm not even sure if it really has any effect on me. I was not fair skinned before I was diagnosed with lupus and tolerated the sun really well. Should I try it out and see what happens? Is the sun fine as long as you don't get burnt? I will obviously still use sunscreen, but I was just wondering if anyone could explain this a little better to me since my doctors were kind of vague.

I haven't really tested it myself. I lived in the sun till now. I have noticed out for a picnic and such with the family to much sun makes me sick. Even in my travels into town my right arm near the window will break out in a rash from to much sun with out sunscreen.

Sun supposably triggers flares in us. Just be careful wear sun screen and don't stay out in it for a long time. I think its different for each one of us. some people are worse then others with the sun but as a rule, sun is not a good friend to Lupus brothers and sisters.

Thanks

Your Welcome! Hey so how are you doing dealing with Lupus? Do you have a bad case? How young are you? You look young in your picture. Do you get really weak some days? You have joint pain?

I haven't really had much trouble with the sun. But since diagnosed, I just try not to go in it. Or, I wear really good sunscreen, and a lot of it. Over the past few years though- I seem to get really sick when in the sun a lot.

I guess maybe apply some good sunscreen and try it for 5 minutes. Then, if okay- gradually add more time.

Some people seem to be extremely sensitive to the sun. Others, not as bad. Just take care!

Amy

PS- I use Neutrogena 85. It works pretty good.

Hi whenever I am out in the sun I get this rash on my face it does not itch but it does not look like a lupus rash. Of course I am very dark skinned, how will I know if it is lupus related or not. It does not go away. But it is very tiny bumps not puss like or anything all over my cheeks. sometimes I also get a few dry patches of skin, I figured I would ask you guys since I never seem to get str8 answers from the doctors. Last time I went she noticed it but only said we have had several people come with those type rashes and left it at that.. I am confused....lol as usual.

I am 21 years old and was diagnosed with SLE in May. Getting the diagnosis was a relief because since Feb of this year I had fluid in my lungs (they thought it was pneumonia) which led to a partially collapsed lung, a blood clot, heart failure, and some kidney damage. I don't really have much joint pain, only if i overdo something. like if i am too active one day i might have a stiff knee or ankle the next. all my labs are getting close to normal and i have been getting back to living my life..start classes again in 2 weeks. wish me luck!

I go in the sun, but only with Neutogena 85. I love Florida, and we are able to go as long as I stay out of the sun during the hottest pasrt of the day and wear sunscreen. Before I started wearing a strong sunscreen, my skin would sting, and a red rash would appear, like a heat rash. Also, sometimes meds used to treat Lupus cause you to be more photosensitive. What meds do you take?
