I was wondering if anyone has actually tried to go tanning with having Lupus. I know to stay clear of the sun and use sun block. (which I do) I was just wondering because my sister insist that I try tanning. She knows I have this disease but I dont think she really grasp what it is all about. Thanks for listening.

Hi,And I know we all miss the sun. But remember, with no immune system and tanning they are finding out causes cancer. How would you fight this with your Lupus and no immune system if this happened.

I know it is hard, but you know you are probably just as great looking ala natural.

Take care and "know you are in the same boat as so many, and together,we can all keep it from sinking!!Yooper.

Hi,

My doctor says that tanning is just as bad as being in the sun. I use in the summer time a self tanning lotion (dove) and it works. Hope this helps.

Thank you all for your reply's. I will look into the spray tan and also the summer time self tanning lotion.

My sister just doesn't understand because she is healthy and goes to the tanning bed all the time.

Thanks again

Maybe its not that your sister understands maybe its because she scared. I had a friend that was like a sister and when I got sick she did the same thing. She would make fun of me regarding the sun. That was some time ago, now she understands the magnitude of the situation. Maybe it would be of some help to your sister if she read some books on lupus, just a thought.

I work outside. I wear a hat and sunblock. Even that's not enough. Just a few minutes of sun and I get the rash. Any longer and I start to get dizzy. It's not just the lupus, but also side effects from many of the drugs. I learned the hard way. There are good self tanners that don't make you look orange. Personally, I use Jergens Natural Glow. Tell your sister that she'll look like a prune in 20 years. I also learned that the hard way.

Thank you. I heard that Jergens is good. I also get very sick if I am in the sun to long. I figured tanning would do the same thing but I just wanted someone else's opinion.

My sister already looks like she is 60 and she is only 43. Her face is real pruney. She will never learn. She lays out in the sun plus goes to a tanning bed. CRAZY.

Thanks again

I'm always told that I have beautiful creamy skin (with a hint of rosy rash) and I reply I can't be in the sun. So there are alot of benefits of not being in the sun. I can't even be under fluorescent lights for very long before I get the rash and I get dizzy and almost faint. So I do use the Jergens or Dove not only does it give you a nice sun glow effect but it also mosturizes the skin.

Just wanted to add that some medications you take may not warrant going into the sun due to adverse reactions.

Skin is the largest organ on the body. Why wilt it, wrinkle it prematurely and risk melanoma or other skin cancer to look good with a tan?

Photosynthesis of Vit. D takes place via sunlight, especially on the face and hands. A few minutes MAY not cause you a problem where it would cause another person a big problem; and vis-a-vis.
