Dear Brian,

Let me inform you that Lupus affects most women than men. It is not contagious, but there should be a family history of lupus. Stress is one main culprit. However, the blue print has to be present for it to actually affect. Why don’t you find out if there are other women or even men in your family who have your mom’s symptoms? That will get you somewhere. You first consult your doctor who will mention a host of tests to be conducted. A blood test is a must. You will be then referred to a rheumatologist too.

A blood test will indicate the immunity of the body. Another vital test is positive ANA that shows the presence of an antibody.

Hi Ted,

Thank you for the valuable information. I have already sought an appointment with our general practitioner. As you say, I shall seek other’s help in the family to ascertain if anyone has my mom’s symptoms. Although women her age have complained about joint aches etc, they have been treated for arthritis or rheumatism. But lupus? Seems a recent disease to have attacked the world!

The symptoms are so close to menopause, that we often would misinterpret the signs. Will stay in touch with you after the doctor’s consultation.

Brian
