Positive tests, negative symptoms...

Hello everybody, new member here.

I've read other people's stories, that had symtomps for Lupus, but negative tests... Well, I'm the other way around.

My tests read:

ANTINUCLEAR Ab: 1.57 POSITIVE

VDRL: NEGATIVE

DNA (ds) Ab: 80.70 POSITIVE

My doctor ordered them when I complained about swollen fingers - but that quickly remitted, and I really don't have any other symptomps. Since I found out about these tests, I noticed quick, rather weak and mobile joint pains, but I don't know if it's autosuggestion, or now I'm more aware of them. I've also recently developped an ankle bone spur, but I don't know if it's in any way related.

My doctor went in a 2 week vacation and promised to follow up when he comes back. I'm left to wonder and worry...

Can I have Lupus with no symptoms?

Yes, you can have the disease without the symptoms. What may be going on is that you have it, and just nothing has been stressful enough for you to cause a major flare to make you realize that you do have it. Apparently that is what happened with me. I had a major flare up due to stress when my dx was made.

At the risk of sounding a bit silly, I can explain what happened to me the way the drs. explained it to me.

I had Lupus and it was lying dormant in my body. I bought a business - a child care center - and with it came TONS of stress. After so much stress on me, it caused a major flare with the Lupus that was dormant in my body.

Since Lupus tends to be a pretty blanket diagnosis, and effects everyone a bit differently, then yes, with the positive blood tests, you can have the disease (I hate that word, but am blank for a better term) without necessasarily having any symptoms. Also, keep in mind that you may actually have some of the symptoms, but they may not be obvious enough to be bothersome.

I had blood clots in my legs a few years prior to actually getting really sick enough to warrant the Lupus label, come to find out, clots are a symptom of Lupus, and had my dr. checked into it further then, we would have known before my major flare.

Also, I have a friend that is going thru the testing right now, and her drs. have told her that just because you have positive ANA test, that doesn't always mean Lupus.
