I'm kindof puzzled right now. My mom just bought a book about different Illnesses and it said that people with Lupus should avoid anything alfala because it has canavine in it and could cause flare ups. I was shocked because our horses eat alfalfa mixed hay so it scared me a little but I just read in one of my nutritional healing books about all the vitamins and supplements to take for Lupus...they were categoies starting from essential to important to helpful and in the helpful column it said to take 1000 to 1500mg a day of kelp or alfalfa......I'm around the hay alot but now don't know if its good or bad....If anyone knows anything let me know....Thanks

Hi,

I just looked this up in my "lupus book" and it said to stay away from alfalfa sprouts they contain an aminoacid known as L-canavanine, which indreased inflammation in patients with autoimmune disease. All members of the legume family contain L-canavanine, but is highly concentrated in alfalfa sprouts. Documented flareups of lupus disease have been associated with increased consumption of alfalfa sprouts and have disappeared when sprouts are avoided. The book I'm getting this information is called "The Lupus Book" by Daniel J. Wallace, M.D. It also has a table of Vitamins and Herbs.

I hope this helps.

Eva
