Ok, maybe I'm just being sensitive and taking everything out of context but if so, I'm sure you guys are the ones who will tell me. For those of you who have not had the opportunity to check out my profile, I teach in a middle school, a.k.a Germ City, USA. I know being in that type of work environment puts someone with ourt diagnosis at a higher risk than most, so I take every precaution I can. At the beginning of the year I explain illness to my students and answer their questions and discuss their concerns. Some of them have family members who are dealing with similar illnesses. For that matter, some of them are faced with an auto immune disease. We make set personal and classroom hygeine goals. We know there is no way to remain germ free, but we are going to fight to stay as healthy as possible.

Here's the problem. Within the last month, we have had two confirmed cases of MRSA on our team (a group of shared students among four teachers). One of these students was allowed to stay in the classroom because our school nurse was out for a week and we didn't know what it was, even though the administration strongly suspected it was something infectious. After many complaints, a weeks worth, and the nurse returned, it was confirmed. I am very upset, not just because they compromised my healthy but every one's health including the student who has MRSA by ignoring the matter.

A week after we asked our administration to look into the matter they send a notice saying the case was confirmed and precautions were being taken. I emailed and asked wasn't it a bit late for precautions at this time. My concerns for my well-being considering that I am on immune suppresants were basically dismissed. I am very upset regarding this situation. Am I making more of this than there is? I value your thoughts and opinions. You are the ones who understand my world. Please let me hear from you. This is stressing me out.

Mochajava-

My opinion (for whatever it's worth) is that you have a right to be upsent. Especially when it sounds like everyone in the school system knows your condition.

I'm sure they "had" to tell everyone they were taking precautions. Even though, they themselves know that it's kinda late now. --- And at this point, what are you to do? There's nothing that you can do, except express yourself. Right?

Anyway, I feel you have a right to be upset. Upset for yourself, and upset for your students and the rest of the staff.

My oldest daughter is a kindergarten teacher. She is pregnant. I know that for her sake and the sake of her students, I would NOT be happy! I'm an overly protective mother. Even if she is 22.

Really though- what kind of precautions are they taking now?

I do hope that no-one else gets that darn thing. Especially you! Please take care of yourself.

And by the way, I commend you for telling MS students about your illness. And I commend them for being understanding. You all are great to take your own precautions.

Again, please take care of yourself.

Amy

I would be fuming! Not just for your health but for every student and teacher in the school. We all know how tough this thing is to treat but I can't believe they waited a week...I would be especially peeved if that was my child (although I think I would have taken him/her to the hospital on my own). Does your district not have a substitute nurse? I know school districts are extremely cautious about being sensitive to students and parents so they may not like to send a "you need to take your child to the doctor" letter home but in light of what we know about MRSA and how easily it is spread if precautions aren't taken (and how many middle school students do you know that religiously wash their hands and make sure their belongings are disinfected). I might just have to send an anonymous letter to the local news station and let them know that a suspected case of MRSA was overlooked for a week. Would they do the same thing with a child with TB or any other contagious disease? *stepping off my soapbox now* Please stay well...you are in my thoughts.
