Hello all. I'm afraid I have many questions and may become a bit of a pest for a few days. My husband and I have done quite a bit of research and reading on lupus. We have discovered although lupus affects each of us differently, there are some common trends. I would like to touch on some of those...later. Right now I am puzzled by a problem that I have had for over 3 years now. A sane person would have lost their mind..but I'm not so I'm still functioning. My hands (and other skin areas as well) are covered in slits like razor cuts. They itch like I'm allergic to my own skin. I am aware of every skin shed that I have since the itching drives me to delirium. Nothing and I have tried everything works. Most anything that touches my skin feels like acid burning. Some days my hands are so swollen that I can not move them. So far a combination of Palmers butter and taking acidophilus works the best to keep it to a quiet roar. I have not found any discussions about this particular skin problem. I never get the butterfly rash, but I do get weird bumps under my skin.. the doctors want to classify it as adult acne. For my hands, no help, they send me home with cortisone creams that don't do a thing. I really think that I need a good round of oral steroids and antibiotics, but that's just me. I know the problem is not external, but my own body attacking itself. I just wish I could find a doctor to believe me. Does anyone have any ideas? I am living with it, but it would be nice to have one day of releif.

You will never be a pest on this site ask any questions you have. I have had the discoid rash on my hands and neck area and it is a disc shaped rash that is slightly raised and scaley and mine didn't itch. As for your rash I'm not familiar with this type. Do you have a good dermatologist in your area? That would be the first place I would look for answers to this rash. I also get the butterfly rash almost everyday and somedays my face actually burns and stings. I use sunblock everyday and sometimes that doesn't even help. This illness is a strange one!!

Like mumeva said- You'll never be a pest here. So ask away...

I've not heard of this type of thing either. I've been on some meds (pain meds) that caused itching. Could that be it? Are the slits the way they appear on your skin? Or, are they from your itching?

I would certainly talk to my rheumy and a dermatologist about the skin issues. Maybe they need to do a different kind of blood work to see about an infection...?

Let us know who you decide to talk to and what you find out.

This rash has been a mystery. The slits in my skin are both from itching and also the skin splitting open along the skin lines. No matter how much I use to keep moisture in the skin, it flakes and splits. I have actually tried a sugar scrub to get the dead skin off and then using a calming lotion. This helps to some extent, but it also opens the sores and causes bleeding. Sometimes I think opening up the sores helps them to heal faster. They don't seem to fester up as much. We are moving closer to the University of Virginia. I have hopes. The medical community is said to be one of the best. I hope, I hope, I hope. The last rheumy I had was over there and supposedly a lupus expert. Since I did not have the butterfly rash, she said I did not have lupus and would not even pull the blood work. I guess all you can do is keep trying. Thank you for your kind words and support.
