Been having some really bad sharp, stabbing pains in my lower back on each side. I am worried that maybe it is my kidneys, but Im not sure if it is really something I should worry myself sick over or not. :/ Are there any other things that could possibly be causing this kind of pain? Does anyone else have these too? Anyhting I can do to get relief?

Thanks

~Wendy

Wendy, I am sorry to hear you are are experiencing this. If in doubt though, call your Dr. office and ask to speak to his/her Nurse. They will most likely want to see you though. The ONLY thing that I can think of is the ovaries that are on both sides and that low... When I am ovulating only one of my ovaries hurts and sometimes I do get stabbing pains from that ovary (darn Ovary lol). But not both at the same time. Please don't worry yourself sick though okay? We are here for you.
Lupus has taken much from me but as long as my heart still beats, it has not taken everything!

Wendy, it could be lots of things. I can't remember if you are still on Prednisone but we a prone to UTIs and low back pain is a symptom. I have also had kidney stones and the pain comes and goes as a stone moves. It could also be ovary pain like mentioned. Or a back problem (not sure if you have had issues). I just would be most concerned about something urinary with immunosuppression. It is actually a topic that we have had on forum a few times. If it continues I would call the doctor. April

Hi,

I have had left flank pain (lower back) for a year now. I always knew it was my left kidney aching, and when I started the plaquenil, it went away. So the dr. and I came to the conclusion that I was starting some kidney involvement. I always have some blood in my urine too...so it all came together. That seems to be one of my first signs of a flare too, when my left flank starts hurting. I'm starting to get to know my body finally.

I hope you can pinpoint the pain. I'm sure all our bodies are screwed up and it could be a number of things.

Lynnette

Hi Roxann, that is what is great with the group. It helps so much to talk to others that really understand what you are going through.

I went to a site called WebMD Symptom Checker and entered all of my symptoms. It's funny that 'Fibromyalgia' came back as one of the causes (which I do have). Of course another possible cause listed was 'Pulmonary Embolism' and it had a little red flag come up that I should see a doctor immediately. Ugh! Id like to think it is just fibromyaglia, but guess I will be giving my doctor a call tomorrow anyways just to be on the safe side.

Wendy, I don't think it is the PE or you most likely would have been in an ambulance by now. I know you also mentioned the Fibro. Did you ever have any images of your spine done, like an MRI? I am just asking because my initial visit (before the Lupus diagnosis) was to a Physical Medicine and Rehab specialist for severe back pain and the same sharp stabbing pain that you describe. I had about a year of back pain but with the fatigue and working long hours I was just exhausted and one day fell down the stairs in my house and ended up in the ER. So when the MRI's were done I had long term spinal damage (called degenerative disc disease) it was strange because I had never had a back injury or any back related problems prior to last year. So those abnormalities caused them to do more testing and that is how the Lupus diagnosis came. I did get several rounds (I think 3) of steroid epidurals that made it feel amazing but they only lasted for several weeks. So just wondering if you may have some disc issues in your back. April

I honestly didnt think it was PE either. Lol. No, I have never had any images of my spine done. Oddly, I fell down some stairs back in April and was having excruciating pain for days. Finally went to the ER, but they didnt do any tests other than a blood test and a urine test. I cant remember if I knew about Lupus at that time or if I learned a few days later (it was another doctor that diagnosed me). I just know they were about the same time. My sister had degenerative disc disease, so I know how horrible that can be! She just had back surgery a month or so ago because of it. Thanks for letting me know about what had happened to you. I hope you are doing better now. I can only imagine how painful it must be. I will mention the fall to my doctor when I see her...just in case it may have something to do with that. I just talked to the nurse about 30 mins ago and they do want me to go in for some testing at the ER because of the lower back pain, but my insurance is cancelled right now and I cant afford to go have a bunch of tests done. Sad I am hoping I will be back on my insurance by next week in time for my Rheumy appt. Until then I guess I will just deal with it and hope it doesnt get much worse. Sometimes I feel like I am complaining all the time anymore. I am sure my family thinks I am a hypochondriac! Lol. I am beginning to feel that way myself. Seems everyday is something new. Ugh!
