I would NOT recommend depo. I went on it and it was horrible!!! Gained 40 lbs, bloated every month but no period.. then got pregnant. It's huge dose of hormones every 3 months.

Being sensitive to hormones will be different for each person- with lupus or not. I flare horribly around my period.

I have the Paragard IUD and it's time for it to come out. I'm going to have Mirena inserted since your period usually stops. Mirena has no estrogen and the small amount of hormones are localized so there's no systemic reaction.

What about the mini-pill? IIRC, there's no estrogen (the hormone that causes the problems)

If you're done having children, like I am, the IUD is a great option. It's the most widely form of birth control (world wide) with effectiveness rate at 99%.

My gynocologists stated birth control has no effect on Lupus, but my Lupus doc, who is an integrative medicine doc and the doc that has been able to help alot with Lupus states that the hormones in birth control-especially estrogen can drastically effect Lupus thus contributing to flares. I went off a low-dose pill and got a copper IUD. It seemed OK for a while, but I have alot of irregular bleeding, but we're still not sure if it's the IUD or a hormone imbalance due to getting off the pill after 14 years...

I was unsure i have read on many different sites that yes it does effect and then soem sites say no.... i don't think i have ever discussed it with my lupus dr. I calledmy bennifits today and they do not cover IUD so i made an appointment with my family dr to discuss my options.... I am 27 and have one 5 yr old daughter and i do not want any more kids niether does my boyfriend of 3 1/2 yrs ( he has no kids) so a good option would eb if he got snipped but bc he has no kids and is 28 the dr's won't do it . I have been on the pill for 10 plus yrs now and no matter what pill i am on i have irregular bleeding

Interesting... about all the birth control stuff. I've never thought about it.

I am on Lybrel. It stops the period altogether. I am anemic and when I'd have periods I would bleed horribly. The doc tried several pills, along with iron of course. But, I ended up on this Lybrel. It's wonderful! I'm not sure though about the estrogen. Sorry. But, it would be something to check into.

It doesn't really matter what websites say... if something is affecting you, it's a problem. No 2 lupus patients are alike... and what affects me may not affect you and vice versa- which is why doctors get so confused. You have to find what works for you and if the pill is perfect for you, so be it. I can't use hormonal birth control.. so regardless of what any particular doctor, website, pharmacist says, I can't take hormones.

I had to pay for my IUD out of pocket. Overall, it's the most economical.. when you add up co-pays, etc. And to be hassle free- is priceless.

My friend got hers free from Planned Parenthood.

I once asked my doctor how do I know if something is lupus related or a separate problem? He said we have no way of knowing. The best thing to do is to check out anything that stays around... like my stomach... I vomit like there's no tomorrow... vomiting can be part of lupus but there is still an underlying cause. Does that make sense?

Did you decide on birth control yet? Just wondering how things are working out?

I had another horrible week before my period and can't wait to be over and done with 'em.

Hey Nicole

yes i decided to have my tubes tied.... i go for my first appointmnet On the 23rd of this month. I am so excited i can't wait.... I was off the pill for almost 3 months and by the 3rd month i was feeling great i would have 3 good days to one not so good day.... but i was so happy...almost like being back to my old self....but then I had a pregnancy scare ( i wasn't) but we decided that i should go back on the pill til i see the the gyno. After one week of beingback on it i was back in pain i had to up my steroids which i was hoping i would get off soon

P.S

When my friend was sick with her cf she was in the hospital and feeling down so i made her a poster of pictures and stuff from magazines and they had a t-shirt with that saying on it "pale is the new tan" I had to cut it out and put it on for her bc she was a faithfull tanner in the tanning booth but when she got sick she lost all her colour so i put it on as a joke and she thought it was funny...so thanks for the great memory

Good luck with the future tubal. I know my hormones play a nasty part in how I feel. Are you just going bonkers knowing that feeling better is around the corner once all those hormones are out of your body? The anticipation!

Pale is the new tan.

Well, I'm whiter than white. My dh says I'm bright. I've always stayed out of the sun and with the lupus, I get even less sun now. I spend a lot of time outside but always with sunscreen, sun clothing and in the shade. And I'm so white that even the slightest tanning lotion looks horrible... so I stay all natural. LOL!
