Hi, I was wondering if anyone else struggles with pneumonia? I have had SLE for 17 years. I seem to get it 4 or 5 times a year and am not sure why. My doctors are perplexed as well. I am on a ton of immunosuppresants which most likely contribute. Does anyone have any insight on this?

I don't struggle with it, but oddly enough, the first bout of pneumonia I encountered was in 1999 (in my mid 40's) and diagnosed by a rheumatologist and pulmonologist. It was mycoplasma pneumonia, by definition...more commonly referred to as "walking pneumonia." Doc prescribed doxycycline for six weeks.

Currently, I take Imuran (see profile) and have complex autoimmune diseases.

Have you seen a pulmonologist about this? What about a chest x-ray between bouts of pneumonia: what do they reveal?

God bless.

Well the Dr.s find me "Complicated". I have SLE, RA, Vasculitis, Raynouuds, Sjogrens, Neuropothy, Lupus nephritis, thrombocytopenia, APLS, Fibromyalgia, and osteoporosis. They believe I have pleurasy. I am also on a bunch of immunosuppresants. I take CellCept, methotrexate, and prednisone. I am also on and of cytoxin.I take a ton more meds, but they don't supress my immune system. Every little cold turns into pneumonia. There have been periods between the bouts of Pneumonia where my films are clear, however there is scar tissue. I am 32.

Well, I can certainly empathisize with the boatload of illnesses. I, too, have a medicine cabinet stocked with Rx's. The CellCept, methotreate and prednisone...those three would surely seem to supress your immune system thereby making you susceptible to any virus or bacteria. That scarring in your lungs from the bouts of pneumonia are what my pulmo. referred to as granulomatosis...respiratory infections then activate those and they are then known as histoplasmosis. I believe I am recalling this correctly.

Also, like you, I have vasculitis, history of optic neuritis, Raynouds, had lupus nephritis, osteoporsis in left hip (better than 2 yrs ago when I had it in both hips and back--now largely osteopenia), and macrocytosis, which is caused from the Imuran.

I hope someone has some answers for you soon.
