Still trying to get my head around this awful disease ! At the moment both of my hands are affected, really stiff. I am waiting for the results of my last blood test before I can receive any medication. I've read a lot about a drug called Plaquenil which I am led to believe is very effective. Does anyone have any experience of this drug ?

My hands were affected really bad as well when I was first diagnosed. I could barely hold a coffee cup.

I have been on Plaquenil for 3 yrs now and it really does well with me. I know the side affects are pretty scary. My first thought was which is worse the disease or the side affects from the medication. Anyway, I haven't noticed any extreme affects from Plaquenil. In fact if it wasn't for the Plaquenil I dont think I could function as well as I do today.

Hang in there, we all will support you. It does get easier.

I hope this helps.

My hands and wrist were really bad as well everyday tasks such as opening my car door or even driving for that matter was a challenge. I finally went to see my rhemie and he put me on Prednisone and started me on Plaquenil. Its only been two months since i have been on both but i feel like i got my life back i am sure it has a alot to do with the prednisone since the dr tells me it may take up to 3 months for the plaquenil to start working. The only side effects i have noticed is that i go to the bathroom more I was really against taking medication i thought i could just deal with the pain but i had to realize thats why there are medications out there and i am happy i did I hope your hands get better soon

much love

I have a friend that has terrible pain in her hands. She bought one of those parafin (sp?) wax machines at Wal-Mart. Whenever her hands are in extreme pain, she will use it. It seems to help her. This is just an idea. Not sure if anyone here has tried it or not.

Someone, or myself, could start a post asking about this machine if we wanted to check it out further.

Send me a PM, if you want me to post it.

I hope you feel better soon. Let us know when you get your blood results back and what they decide to put you on. We will be thinking of you.

Acutally I've tried that machine and I love it because it feels so good but for me the heat causes swelling in my hands and then the pain will start. So it feels good at the moment but then I pay later with pain.
