I am reaching out for my daugher who is 26 years old and cannot get a definite diagnosis. The dermatologist removed a spot from her face almost a year ago, and the biopsy came back positive for Lupus. However, any other doctor she goes to will not say she has it, and will not start treatment, because the blood work does not test positive. But she has every symptom, including the painful sores in her mouth. She is wanting to give up and not ever go back to any doctors, but she has 2 young children. How long does it usually take to get diagnosed? Any information will be greatly appreciated.

She might consider seeig a rheumatologist as well as the dermatologist. Lupus symptoms often work closely together in the types (i.e. Discoid and Systemic). I really do think it would be a good idea to have an opinion from both these specialists. The rheumatologist will be the one to actually rule out Lupus, if that's not it; and it's something else. They are the ones that will look at the overall picture. Lupus is hard to diagnose. So, maybe, she doesn't have it. But it would be good to have someone more into it. Becasue then, she'll ahve to do more thorough testing wiht the spots on her face and the sores in her mouth.

Don't let her give up! She's young! She needs to be here for those little ones!!!

I believe she has seen a rheumatologist. As a matter of fact, I was the one who found one for her and made the appointment. She still couldn't get a definite answer. But I do appreciate your replying to me. It helps to know that someone is listening and lending a compassionate ear. All of this worrying about her and those children is taking its toll on me too.

I'm here for ya. Try not to worry to much. You'll stress yourself out and over-do with your own body. So be sure to take care of you too.

Feel free to send me a PM anytime. I'm trying to be a good leader and check this forum every day. But, I must admit- I don't always remember. Guess I'm human, huh?! Anyway, please send me a PM if you need a lending ear or someone to talk to ya. I'm here for ya. I'm pretty good about checking those every day.

My young daughter had painful lesions under the skin on her legs for years, from the time she was 11 years old until she started plaquinel (sp?) She is now 17 and for the first time in her teenage life she is mostly pain free!!

We went to a jillion docs that didn't want to diagnose a child and had 3 biopsies before she recieved the diagnosis of panniculitis. Her blood work only reveals a high ANA. It took years of persuading doctors because she was a child and no one in this area would do anything!!

We saved our money in order to fly to Cleveland ohio to see a doctor that I found on the internet and finally got a diagnosis and of course with the diagnosis came the much needed medicine. Our doctor then arranged for someone locally to see her, even though wasn't 18 y/o.

All I can say is, be persistent and never, never, never, give up. Try your best to remain calm when dealing with docs and offices that discount your requests for help. I like to use the question to docs like, "OK, if this were your family member and they had suffered so long, what would you do???" Don't be afraid to email docs on the web and ask for their help. You'll be surprised how easy some of these major lupus treatment/research centers are to get an appointment and if your funds are limited, ask for help!! The answer "No" is only a word so hang in there until you find the word "YES."

Thank you for your supportive advice. I will pass it on to her. The biggest obstace is her insurance is very restrictive as to what they will pay for. Her doctor referred to the Mayo Clinic but they won't cover it. But I will try to correspond with some of the email doctors. Thanks again for your help.

Let us know how she's doing and what they figure out. We'll be keeping her, and you in our thoughts.

Gotta love some insurances, huh?! We have a pretty good one. But they wouldn't let me go to May Clinic either, since it's in another state.

Hang in there and visit us any time. We're here for ya.
