My darling 21year old son Darragh collapsed and died suddenly in his student accomodation on Oct 1 2003. No words can describe the devastating effect this had on our family especially as the pathologist's report stated that no cause could be found. How could a fit "healthy" sports-loving 21year old just drop dead? When I became aware that most conditions which cause Sudden Cardiac Death in young people can be hereditary I was concerned for my three younger daughters. Not only had I lost one child but I was more at risk than most of losing another! As there was no family screening clinic in Ireland we travelled to London and were finally put in contact with an electrophysiologist in this country. He diagnosed LQTS in my youngest daughter (then aged 17) and through genetic testing their father was also found to have it.Eleanor was fitted with an ICD. Six months later it shocked her when her mobile phone startled her in sleep. She is now on beta blockers and although she misses her sports she lives a very normal life. I am so glad we pursued family screening as we know that Ellie is now safe and has a normal life expectancy.

Four years ago I became involved in setting up two support groups with other affected families: SCDyoung www.scdyoung.ie and LQTS Support Group in asssociation with the Irish Heart Foundation. Our main aims are to support affected families & to effect change so that others may live; to increase awareness;encourage placement of automated external defibrillators in schools, sports venues and public places and to encourage screening of our youth for heart conditions.

There are now two dedicated family screening centres in Ireland (both funded by charitable donations)which are doing great work. We will be lobbying for government support.

Hi my name is Helena. I read your post and it nearly had me in tears! I too suffer from long QT and have and ICD as well. I'm so sorry for your loss and I'm so very happy that your other daughter is doing well. I can sympathize with her, I have been shocked MANY times. Its unpleasent to say the least and I have had to change my life entirely. Your in my prayers. I'm so happy to have finally found a place where people can understand what I go through!

Hi my dear

I did get your message. As a 55 year old mother who is involved in teaching special needs children, helping organise safe acommodation for a student daughter, clearing out parental home and then waiting with anticipation for quite some time to know if the buyers would come up trumps not to mention the work I'm doing voluntarily with issues regarding SCD in young people and LQTS support I haven't managed to reply or to figure out how to communicate with you personally. I really would like to keep in touch with you and hope life will settle down a bit soon so we can communicate more personally

I am doing a little better. My cold has much improved.Finding it really hard to talk to my Drs. about which medications are safe to take.I have a 31 year old son with special needs also.He is doing great at this time.Especially considering all I have been going through. My prayer is that I can live a life that will be enjoyable with my family.I feel so guilty when I'm sick and worry them.Nice to have someone to talk to that knows what I'm going through. My grand mother passed suddenly at an early age for no apparent reason.and a cousin alsodiedin her 20's.When I started passing out when I was angry, scared,or even too warm we knewsomething was seriously wrong. My entire family is being checked. My daughter and granddaughters are getting their test in about 12 days.My son has already had his and I'm awaiting his results.I am praying for you.Ican't see how anyone has as much strength as you.Not only do you keep going on,you are so involved in helping others.Sorry this is so long.Guess I neededto get it all out.It finally feels like someone does understand.
