Do your best to help your son feel like he has and to see his strengths. Try to get his reading to be about things he is interested in. If he likes trains (just an example) then get his reading to be about them.

Good luck to both of you. Keep trying to make school a positive exerience. Help him have time away from learning to just do what he wants to do as well as the acedemic part of school.

Wish you both well....

I totally agree with parental involvement!

No matter how serious the exceptionality, students with parents that give extra time and support ensure that their children are making progress toward and are meeting academic and social goals. Moreover, from observation and experience of decades of working within the public and private school sectors, I have noticed that such students tend to have more positive attitudes and have higher self-esteem than their peers....

Get involved in your child's learning and don't just take the easy path. This is what this mom (the author of the book The Dyslexia Doctor) did, it is a lesson to all parents.... So many kids today would have a much greater chance if parents would do what this mom did. If your child has dyslexia or a reading problem this book is a must read. Do not just let someone throw medication at the problem. Work on fixing the problem....

I don't know what to tell you. Even if he does end up staying in the school, maybe you could move him later. It doens't have to be an either or thing with a permanent answer. Unfortunately what his happening to you isn't something I can answer or advise. There has got to be someone who can be an advocate for him and for you.

I will keep you and your son in my prayers....

I appreciate your suggestions and I will look into them. I'd do anything to help him. Right now I am working on his insurance to get him to more specialized doctors and possibly some sort of therapy that will help him with memory. Thank you for taking your time to hear my story....

Hi,
My learning disability is diagnosed as LD-NOS. I do remember what I read better than hear but not to the extent of it being the main reason for the disability. Mostly I just need to learn everything consciously. For example if I learn one thing, it is one skill and if there is something similiar to me it is a different skill, while to others it is the same skill, but similiar to something already known.

Hope we can continue to talk here. PM me if you ever want to....

Hi,

I’ve been on MDJ for a couple of years now come February. I’m currently a member of 20 groups and throughout that time I’ve noticed that many people homeschool their kids. There’s mention of it in many of the groups I frequent. Homeschooling can be terrifying to start and very rewarding, as well as draining. I invite you to come to the Homeschooling group and check it out ( http://www.mdjunction.com/homeschooling ). Support is a wonderful thing when you’re starting something you’ve...

Hope so.

What do you do/feel when people talk about how easy something is?
It's not a person I can avoid, although I also mean in general, with people you don't see regularly. But there is one person I can't avoid who says things are easy all the time.

I am so frustrated and feel so dumb. My IQ isn't that high in the first place and having someone say how easy things are is very frustrating.

Hope more people come here....

I wish I were diagnosed that young. I was diagnosed less than a year ago, but it was only confirmation, not new information. I am in my 30s. I was being tested as part of trying (haven't yet heard results) for SSD because I have other disabilities also.

Thanks for everyones encouragement. I want to take audit a class at the collge here. But the problem is that it costs the same to audit as to take it for credit. And even though I haven't called to confim this part (I do know the cost of...
