Hi, I'm rainey and I have a dairy allergy. No dairy - at all. I have to read ingredients on everything. Been about 5 yrs. now. It started with acid reflux and chronic diarhea. Nothing worked. Then my Dr. asked me to go off dairy. I went off with no results. Then I read a book on it and discovered that I must read labels for more ingredents than just milk or dairy. The soy cheese I was eating had casin in it. I eliminated that and had fantastic results. Complete turn around in my life. I couldn't believe it. I told my dr. and he was happy. I have had accidents (ordered chicken salad that had sour cream in it) I asked the waitress to check for dairy. Called later and she told me she didn't know sour cream was dairy. I educated her. I have had several accidents since finding out. Not only does my stomach flair up and I dehydrate, but also congestion and hives. Alot of medications have lactose in or on them. I can't take any medications with lactose in them either. Even though my Dr. suggested I go off dairy, he was not supportive of taking me off some of my meds. with lactose in them. Finally, he did and again I felt soooooo much better. I hope to become an active member and help others maybe. Rainey

Milk from a cow has protiens in it. Lactose is one of them. The others are Whey and casin. When you read ingredients on products you may see these words. A product can say 'lactose free' and still have another protein from a cow other an lactose in it . Its true that it is 'lactose free', but with another of the proteins in it is not 'dairy free'. Some people just react to one of the proteins and not the others. I react to all three. You will see whey listed on products like bread and baked goods. Casin you will see on products like rice and soy cheeses.

Almost all of pain meds. have lactose in/on them. lactose is used for a filler in some meds. They put a coating on alot of pills made from lactose called 'lactose monerate' (sp?) It acts as a preservative so the pill can withstand heat/cold. Zertec (allergy med) has lactose in it as a filler and this preserative. Lipitor also has it. Only way to know is to read the ingredients. It is listed as an 'inactive ingred.) (giggles - not in me) If prescription med. - ask pharmists or ask for paper that comes w/ the med. Or check it out on the web.

One ingredient that looks like an milk product is 'lactate'. That is the enzine our bodies make to digest milk. That is what a lactose intollerant person is missing. Our bodies make this. You can buy it in pills in drug stores/health food stores. Take it before injesting milk products. Ppl. with intollerance it helps. You can buy lactate milk & ice cream. It has the enzine added to the product. Ever see that in the dairy case?

I'll check around for a web site with this info. in it for you. Gotta run now

Let me know if I can be of any help. Rainey

Thanks Rainey. That is some wonderfully helpful information. Sometimes I eat "lactose free" products and still get bad reactions. Perhaps that is why.

Hi,

Yes - casin is a milk protein. This could be reason you reacted to products that were lactose free. I made this mistake in the beginning of my journey. I'm sending you to nomilk.com. I can't get it to post a link. Copy and paste it. It has valusable information that I think would really help you.

A dairy intollerance will keep its discomforts/reactions confined to the digestive track. A dairy allergy will give digestive discomforts and also hives and/or congestion. It is not confined to the digestive track.I had a dairy intollerance and grew into a dairy allergy.

I just want to tell you this as I tell anyone interested this: Arby's and McD's french fries have milk on them. They put whey on them to make them look pretty and give them a coating. Anything with a breading or a coating could have whey on it. I had one of my worse experiences with ff from Arby's. I asked emplyee, too and she said 'no' and thought my question was a joke. You always ask for allergen book in fast food places or check web site for allergens. Don't depend on employees. I learned that the hard way.

Anxious to hear from you again. Rainey

Hi Rainey,

What a great and helpful website, nomilk.com. It is so helpful and enlightening and scary all at the same time. I love food and to see all of the restrictions is just overwhelming. Again, thanks so much for all you help though. Knowing there are other people out there who are searching for answers is comforting. I am so new at all of this having JUST been diagnosed.

I am wondering however (AND THIS GOES FOR ANYONE READING THIS), is anyone here also has a Fructose Intolerance on top of your lactose intolerance? I was diagnosed with both which is even more restricting. Scary stuff for a food lover and non-cooker like me.

Talk to you soon

Hi Cynderela, The best book I ever read on the subject is "Dairy Free Cookbook' by Jane Zurkin. It was my 'bible' when I first dx. You don't like to cook? I love to cook. It has products listed that are dairy free in this book and there manufacturer. Do you have a Wagman's store near you? They put out a pamphlet listing products they sell in the store and if they have dairy in them. If you decide to do some cooking - let me know. I would be willing to help you along in any way I can. I will be married 35 yr. this Aug. We run a backyard organic garden and I put up alot of produce for winter use. I consider myself an experienced cook. I like to cook from scratch so I know the ingredients.

How are you feeling? Are you making an progress w/ the dairy free diet and frustose free diet. I don't know anything about frutose free diets. I'm going to go goggle it now.

bye Have a healthy day Rainey
