HI

I have always gotten sick from lactose - since I was very young. I get severe leg cramps when I eat dairy. Actually I get cramps all over if I eat enough. I also get severe gas from lactose. SOme of my family get the opposite - they get all bound up. My whole family is intollerant.

I was not diagnosed until I was 41. And that was sad. But it was also fabulous, because it explains so many things for me and for other family members. It is very important to know.

Some of the things I have discovered -

1. lactaid pills and chewables - they do work.

2. Lactose will not hurt you initially, but after you eat (or consume) a certain amount , then all of a sudden it will kick in and you will get very sick. That is the reason that lactose intolerance is so confusing.

3. If you drink non-fat milk it may not bother you at all.

4. Butter and whole milk are suicide.

5. Highly processed foods (such as highly processed cheeses) will not affect you as quickly as others.

6. If you want to lose weight - drink whole milk; but you will not be a happy camper.

7. if have heard that after you stop eating foods with lactose, or cut the amounts down very low, you will become more suseptible.

8. BUT - after reducing your lactose ingestion a lot for a while, you can re-start to slowly introduce it into your system . Over time you will probably become able to tolerate quite a lot b efore you have an attack.

9. having severe lactose intolerance as a child can cause you to be judged to be retarded by family and teachers. I was and I know a cousin who was. Later in life, we both were able to demonstrate amply that we were not in any way challenged. However, it did leave deep scars on our characters.

1. Lots of different pills contain lactose as an inert ingredient and it can and will make an intolerant person very sick. Example - Lasinopril contains dehydrated lactose and makes me very, very sick; but prinivil which is virtually the same medicine does not contain any lactose and does not make me sick at all.

Hope this helps you all .

Love, Raoul

My life expectancy is really low, so if you have any questions, you better ask them as soon as possible. Of course, I should admit, the doctors have been telling me I have less than one week for more than 2 years already.
