I am new to this site and would just like to get a better understanding of how others have dealt with family members with Korsakoff's.

A month and a half ago I found my mother completely out of it in her home. She stunk of urine and could not stand. She did not really know where she was. At the time I thought she had tried to kill herself with some sot of medication but by that eveining I understood that she had had some sort of alcohol related incident. She was admitted to the hospital and has been there ever since. I was told about five days into her stay there that she had Korsakoff's syndrome. While her health has improved physically, she continues to be very confused about her daily life and is not connected with the real world.

While she no longer needs hospital care for physical reasons I do feel that she needs to be cared for. The only family she has are my brother and I and neither of us are financially or emotionally prepared to care for her. As much as I hate to do it, I believe she needs to be taken care of in a nursing home. She always said that she did not want to end up in a nursing home but I don't know what else to do.

Can anyone offer any advice? Have you had success with someone living on their own? Are there any other options to care for her?

I am also wondering if there is anything more I can do for her to help her improve?

If you have any suggestions I would appreciate it.
