For 25 years physicians in the UK have been using gut specific hypnosis to relieve IBS symptoms. They started using it in IBS patients who did not respond to drug and diet therapy. Now, they suggest that it should be the first treatment to use before medications. It has been used in this country extensively since 1996 and roughly 85% of people who use it become symptom free and remain that way after the sessions end. To my way of thinking, an effective treatment that is not invasive, won't do any harm and leaves me feeling well and with peace of mind....that's a no brainer. The drugs only cause other problems with side effects and such and when you quit taking them the IBS comes right back. It worked for me and I've been symptom free ever since. I can't understand why more people don't use it.

Hi Melissa.

I never even would have thought of hypnosis for IBS. Maybe it's because hypnotherapy is one of those alternative therapies, hidden behind other alternatives. I mean, to be honest, yes...the way you put it, it sure does sound like a no brainer. Yet I, who have been open to alternative therapies for another problem, have never even considered hypnotherapy.

It might also be that when people hear the word, they think of hypnotist, free psychic ability psycho babble. The stuff gypsies and fortune tellers are made of.

I'm not making light of it, so please don't take offense. But now that you've brought it up, I have to ask myself why. And that was the answer I came up with.

Another question would be, are hypnotists licensed? And if so, how do you go about finding a good one, or the right one for you?

Most states do not license hypnotherapists. However, look for one who is certified by one or more national certifying organizations: American Council of Hypnotist Examiners (the most stringent education and certifying requirements), International Medical and Dental Assn, International Assn. of Counselors and Therapists or the National Guild of Hypnotists. These are good, national certifying bodies. If you are looking for someone trained in the specific techniques needed for IBS go to either www.ibshypnotist.com or www.tranceworkers.com, locate the menu for IBS Associates and scroll down to your state to find someone trained and certified in the specific techniques required for IBS.

Your garden variety hypnosis is not effective for IBS. It must be specific to work but it works exceptionally well. When you realize your unconscious mind runs your body, much like a computer runs a robot, then it makes sense to use the unconscious mind to change the way it is running a part that isn't functioning correctly.

I agree with you that TV and movies have given hypnosis a bad rap. They portray it totally differently from what it really is. In spite of the portrayal hypnosis for medical uses is one of the fastest growing areas of medicine because it is the safest. It is the safest because it is non-invasive and therefore cannot react with any other treatment. Also, it is safe because your unconscious mind will not allow you to mask important symptoms. So, go to the web sites above and take a look. Happy relief to you!

I'm sorry I forgot to tell you that you can contact me any time with questions. I'm back in town now until the week between Christmas and New Year's. I'll be much more prompt in responding now that my travel schedule to lecture and teach has ended for the year.

Between my own private clients and those of the hypnotherapists I've trained we have worked with several thousand IBS clients since 1996 and they are all still symptom free. We track a statistical sample every quarter and I still keep in touch with the original research clients I saw from 1995-1998. They have gone through the ups and downs of life but they still remain symptom free from IBS. Therefore, it appears that once it is corrected it is similar to a broken bone--it heals stronger than it was originally.
