MDJunction to me

Sylvia4648"I have suffered from depression most of my life, but had some long, non-depressed times. The last 16 years have been an on-going, constantly worsening nightmare for me medically, socially and with my family. 11/2008 to the present has been the worst time in my life, and new things just keep piling up. During that time I’ve gone from being mostly homebound to being totally homebound due to the errors of about 2 dozen doctors who overmedicated me so badly that I came home w/ 4 conditions I didn’t go in with. I spent months wanting to die, and finding MDJ may well have saved my life. It’s one of the worst feelings to know that nobody on earth needs you for anything; but now that I’ve been a group leader for awhile, there are people here who need me. Thanks MDJ." (Sylvia4648)

Herbs like deglycyrrhizinated licorice root (DGL), enteric-coated peppermint, slippery elm bark, ginger, marshmellow, Swedish bitters, and fennel seed can be very helpful in calming the symptoms of IBS. Many of these healing herbs have been used for generations and come with few side effects. You may want to do some research to familiarize yourself with their use, however, or seek consultation with a qualified practitioner, for best results.

I'm curious, Maryanne...Which of these do you use, if any, and do you use them in pill form?

I know drinking peppermint tea helps settle my stomach. Acai is supposed to help also. I wonder if anyone tried these things.

I've never tried Acai. I do know that peppermint is a natural sedative for upset tummies, so the tea is a great idea.

I have also heard of all of the things Maryanne mentioned, from studies in Natural Medicine after I had begun my chronic constipation, but before I knew what IBS was.

I love the fact that we have natural alternatives available to us. But everyone please remember, natural supplements, or even OTC drugs can interfere with meds you are already taking, so it is best to consult with your doctor first.

Would an upper endoscopy show if you had an ulcer? I have been on a lot of anti inflammataries. I keep wondering if I am going to or have an ulcer. I just had an endoscopy due to damage to larynx and esophagas.

Oh, I love this thread. Something I just read, tho, and I want to share, is that Peppermint, if you have GERD can be an issue, cuz it CAN relax the vale between the stomach and the esophagus, and it can cause some pretty severe heartburn. So it's not for everyone!

Also, with licorice root, you gotta be careful--it especially should be taken under the guidance of a practictioner, at the very least an herbalist who knows what other drugs you're taking, cuz certain forms can be dangerous to people with heart, liver, kidney, and high blood pressure issues. However, it has been shown to kill H. pylori, and you don't necessarily have to take ab's to do that... unless you have a condition that would prevent you from taking it, as mentioned above. The way that it works is to strengthen the stomach's defense system and allow it to continue to produce the acid it would normally produce, thus allowing you to digest your food properly, while correcting the ulcer at the same time.

I'm so much a fan of natural and alternative methods. I think they are so much better for our bodies because they were meant to be used by us in a certain form, whereas the conventional meds were made and are synthetic, thus not really intended to go in us--and are being forced! Course, not all things work the same way for everyone and what works for me won't necessarily work for someone else...

Thanks for this post, I think it's gonna help a LOT of people who are searching! *hugs*

Jen

Just because it's impossible doesn't mean it can't happen.

I'm not a doc, so anything I say is my opinion only. Nothing I say is meant as offense, I offer what I can as help. I believe in educating myself on all my medical issues and being my own advocate, for no one else with do that on my behalf. I recommend we all do the same!

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. Perhaps I truly am insane for expecting these docs to listen to me when I say the same things repeatedly to no avail? LOL. I am tired of seeking out new docs and getting the same result time and again...Forgive me if I seem bitter some days.

Hey Ewan,

I used to have a post here on natural treatment for IBS. However, I went through the meds/tx section, and I can see it's been deleted. I have a long experience in herbology and aromatherapy, and if the GL's don't mind the posting things that I have a reference for, I'd be glad to dig it up and re-post.

Hugs,

Jen Smile
