Anyone have a sleep study done? I just had one, and was extremely disappointed in the Report I received. So little data, very minimal interpretation. It was done to see if I was having episodes of apnea that might be causing seizure-like responses. I am on a LOT of anti-seizure medication in order to control my seizures, but I still experience trouble sleeping on the 1-2 nights a month when my seizures would typically occur (week before my period; called "catamenial epilepsy"). So......I did the sleep study, but the guy who read the report is a pulmonologist (I looked this up after the fact), NOT a neurologist. And even though I DID experience wakings and trouble sleeping, the report was lame at describing neurological correlates with the "hypoapnea" events. I'm going to pick up the raw data and see if I can figure it out myself.....or take it to my neurologist (which ticks me off, since I paid to have the sleep study done, and expected it to be done RIGHT!).

It confirmed that I have a prolonged sleep latency (ticked about this simple statement.....I had trouble falling asleep that night because something about my brain kept startling me back awake....at least five times!!! but no mention of pre-sleep problems at all. Doubt they even looked at it, even though I commented on it in my after-report).....and "sleep efficiency was reduced". (er, yeah, I woke up in the middle of the night with an active brain that wouldn't shut up; the tech finally told me to read or something-I played with my iphone-to wear myself out, which is not actually measuring how long I would've laid there awake, but whatever) AND THEN! There were FOUR "hypoapnea" events throughout my sleep....which was approximately for four hours during the entire night. So, ummmm, is there a neurological correlate to the hypoapneas....like maybe they happen at a certain stage of sleep every cycle......?!

At the very start of my problems, I experienced status epilepticus in the middle of the night....seizures so severe I was unconscious for a long time. Medicated, the next three months I had seizures that came several times a night (before my period), as if I would have a seizure, fall asleep....then have another one, then fall asleep.....then have another one (my dh would wake me up out of them). On new medication, and then with the addition of a second med, the seizures are "under control", but I have this sense of "hyperactive brain" instead. This sleep study is the first time the activity has been documented.....AND THE GUY DIDN"T INTERPRET IT!!!!!!!!

Any thoughts on how to look at the data? I'm actually going to pick up the raw data on disc from the hospital. The tech said I could maybe try to find a neurologist who could interpret it.....even though my study purpose stated I was there to assess nocturnal seizure activity, it's apparently MY job to find someone to review it appropriately. ARGH!!!

Not sure what to say. You might want to forward ur results to a neurolgist and have them take a look. Or perhaps get another one done and be specific about what u want them.to try to find. I've had 2 done and both never explained about the fact that i can't fall asleep. And supposedly my awakenings are due to my heart getting startled. But most studies just look at the basics: sleep apena, restless leg syndrome, stuff like that. If ur results don't fall under anything specific u will usually b dissappointed w/ interpretations. The last sleep doc I saw even stopped working w/ me to find a solution. I wish u the best!
