MDJunction to me

MissNikkiAnn"When you have an illness with the name "Non-Familial Dysautonomia" (a name that most people, and even doctors, have never heard of), you need a network
of people who understand the name and the symptoms/issues that come with it.
MDJunction led me to that network of people during a very confusing and sickly time. For this I am thankful. And for this reason I try my best to give back to other members the same care and help that I received through MDJunction.

i was reading a man's blog. He said he has a theory that he would elaborate on later (I never found it) and asked "Did you recently quit smoking."

YES! I stopped 5 months ago. I've had a low thyroid for years but it got really bad after I stopped smoking. So now I am dying to know what his theory was!!! Is there a connection between the two?

Does anyone else know? Did anyone else stop smoking and suddenly have serious symptoms with hypothyroidism?

This is driving me mad!

MsCtrl ~

Hi, this is news to me. I have tried to quit smoking several times without any luck. Although, I did cut down to around 5 per day when I was pregnant with my last child and after he was born is when my hypo started. Is it linked? I have no idea?

That s interesting, MsCtrl ...

I ve been a smoker for 30+ years but was only dx d with hypothyroidism in 2007 . My PCP always lectures me on quitting but has never mentioned any ties between smoking and thyroid problems.

I have such an erratic thyroid that if I even (for a nano second) thought that quitting smoking would help my thyroid, I would quit yesterday .

My thyroid continually makes me exhausted but my blood work says I don t need my med dosage changed. Sad

You know ladies I personally don't think that those tests are very accurate. I was DX with hashimotos disease in 1993 and I started on .25mcg of Synthroid and now 16 yrs later I'm only on .88mcg and I feel worse than before. It also did not shrink my goiter it's getting bigger. Burns me up really!!

I quit smoking in March 2008 and was diagnosed with hypothyroidism in November 2008. I have heard that smoking masks the tests. I've been borderline for years but when I stopped smoking the reading was more accurate. Had I been put on meds years ago I don't think I'd be in the shape I'm in now!

I stopped smoking just 2 months ago, but symptoms did worsen after stopping. I started feeling bad in January and figured it might be tied to smoking too much.

Auntie, that's me too, exactly. My endo doctor told me that in cases like mine (undiagnosed) for ten years, it takes a long time for your body to recover and it never will fully. He also said he can't always rely on the blood work, that I'm the one that knows how I feel. While the pill are obvioulsy needed, they are trying to fool our bodies into thinking it's the real thing....all according to my doc and makes sense to me.

Hello jsmit,

Welcome to our group ~~~

So you do think that there might be a link between thyroid problems and smoking/quitting ?

This is quite interesting !!! Possibly we will get others here with input to this subject and see what we can prove over theory.

I am interested in what others find out also ....
