I just started taking Levothyroxine for hypothyroidism. My hair was falling out before I started taking this med...now it's really falling out. I have only been on 25 mg. for 1 week. My doctor wants to up my to 50 mg. My TSH was 6. I'm really stressing about this hair loss. I'm 40 years old and this is very hard for a woman. I started taking evening primorose oil...I read that this could help. What are your experiences? Could it be the medication making it worse? Will it stop soon. Do I need to be more patient? Any support would be great. My family is tired of hearing me complain and I'm frustrated for some help.Sad

before i was diagnosed (july 2011) i would lose handfulls every time is showered, and brush my hair.. I have fine hair, and now like half my hair is gone.. ive notice since being on levothyroxine my haor only falls out a little bit. Im afraid to brush my hair, or wear it down anymore.. but its messed up because its a symptom of hypo, yet a side effect of levo... good luck

Pandl,

Welcome to the group. Hair loss is one of the big problems I notice with my thyroid problem. I have found that when my levels are good I stop loosing hair but as soon as they go up or down again I can tell because my hair starts to fall out again.

I have other problems when it fluctuates also but this one I notice right away.

Give your meds a little more time to correct your TSH and hopefully your hair will stop falling out. Take Care!

Kardie

I'm not a Dr. and anything I write is my oppinion and my opinion only. I am just like you, I'm here for support and friendship from people who understand what I'm dealing with.

Hair loss and tight itchy skin were the 2 side effects of levo that I couldn't tolerate... I had the dr switch me to Armour, and have not had any more problems.

But I have heard from others taking levo that after time these symptoms disappear

Good Luck
