Hi. My daughter is 17 years old and was diagnosed with Hypothyroid 9 months ago based on a nodule in her neck. Her TSH and T3 has always been in the normal range but because of her symptoms and large nodule, she was placed on Synthroid. After 9 months on Synthroid, she is still rapidly gaining weight, sluggish, achy all over all the time, has anxiety, depression, sleeps all the time and has taken on a very strange appearance. Her face, neck, and upper body is EXTREMELY fat. It does not match her lower half! Her face is very round with a roll of fat from her face to her neck. Her arms have gotten HUGE in the last couple of months. She has the classic buffalo hump, big pad of fat on the back of her neck. Biologically, she comes from normal to small people and she does not resemble any of us right now because of the fat. It makes her look very stocky and we are not stocky people. I KNOW in my GUT something ELSE HAS to be going on with her besides thyroid disfunction. I took her to a new Endocrinologist a month ago for a second opinion and she ran some more tests. Her cortisol pee test came back normal but the Creatinine level was high. The doctor ignored the high Creatinine level and when asked said it was probably due to high muscle mass. She had high antithyroid antibodies so the doc said she had Hashimotos and kept her on the Synthroid. But should'nt she be getting better on synthroid instead of worse? Any chance the cortisol pee test could be a false negative and it's really Cushings?? are there any other tests for cushings? My daughter is ballooning out despite healthy eating and achy ALL THE TIME now so I am desperate for answers. By the way, I FORGOT TO MENTION, she was diagnosed with biPolar disorder about 3 years ago after walking home from school in the middle of the school day and overdosing on almost EVERYTHING in our medicine cabinet and then walking back to school and collapsing soon after she made it to class and almost died. Later she said she was trying to stop her head from spinning and was not trying to kill herself. She was just desperate for the spinning head to stop. We have NO history of mental illness in our family and there is NO abuse in the home so this baffled all of us. Since then, she has been on Lamictal and Zoloft. She still struggles with the depression but the "spinning head" has stopped since on these medications. Her psychiatrist believes her psychiatric problems could very well be due to an underlying endocrine disorder but I have yet to find it!!! Does hypothyroidism really cause all this stuff and wouldn't she be getting better by now on the Synthroid??? If it is just Hashimotos, what else should be be taking to help her??? HELP!

Omigoodness, Desperate , I honestly don t know what to say !!! It sounds as if you have done/are doing everything possible for your daughter.

I wish I had some specific information to give you as to whom to take her to next .

What she is going thru (the ballooning and fat coming on) just doesn t sound right to me.

I will keep her in my daily prayers that you soon find the right dr. for proper treatment for her.

Oh ~~~ Welcome to our group and please return to let us know how she is doing ~~~ We care !!!

Marilyn

What i would keep saying is get another opinion until you get sone answers. I don't know what she can take to help her. As a last resort i would take here to the mayo clinc in minnesoda. If no doctor can find out what's wrong they will. They found out what was wrong with me with in three days. I will keep you and your daughter in my prayers. Welcome to our group.
