In my research, I was under the impression that the "low risk" types caused warts, while the "high risk" did not. The risk levels being in regard to one's chances of developing cervical cancer. However, following a recent post here, I was lead to do a specific Google search regarding this and found sites discussing high and low risk HPV warts.

Which is it?

As far as I know, you can get warts with low and high risk. It is the strains. I believe, that two of the high risk strains can also cause warts as well as abnormal cervix cells. The other possibility is that out of the 102 different strains, a patient may have more than one strain at any one time, so that they are presenting with both warts and abnormalities.

Another thing to bear in mind is that some doctors have wrongly called cell abnormalities warts. This is rare, but I have noticed it happen in particular to younger girls, where a doctor feels that sex before marriage etc is immoral and that HPV is only transmitted from sexual promiscuity. We have had a surprising number of doctors who live in the dark ages and seem to like to cause these girls horrific guilt trips on top of everything else they have to deal with. The word 'wart' sounds somehow dirty and shameful, as opposed to pre-cancerous cells, which would incite sympathy. Just a thought!
