Ask your doctor for a TENS unit. They can be ordered on line for $40 and have always helped my TMJ when it is at its worse. There is something about the muscle stimulation that relaxes the spasms. It is a lot cheaper then the orthodontic work!

Hypnosis is also highly effective for TMJ. If you are considering working with a hypnotist, ask them how they are going to go about the treatment. My experience with TMJ is that it should take no more than one or two sessions. Besides, a good hypnotist will give you a hypnosis CD to use for reinforcement. Some type of tension release in the affected area is important, but overall stress reduction is important as stress is generally the root of TMJ. km

For me the tmj has been kicked in by having lyme Disease and Epstein Barr virus.

Thanks so much for the advice! I used a tens unit on my knee in therapy when I tore two ligaments. It helped a lot - and I almost took one for home then. I should have. I used to tease my therapist and I told her if I had one for home I was going to use it on my abs too.... My insurance would not cover me for one though, but she didn't tell me it was only that much. I was thinking more like hundreds of dollars.... I am in so much pain sometimes with this tmj, it often confuses me. Sometimes I am convinced it's really a toothache and it's not. I will try anything. I have tried Lidocaine patches and all they did was make me itch and barely numb the surface of my face. They never went deep enough to even touch those muscles! I will ask my dr about a tens unit! Thank you!!

Stress definitely has a connection with my tmj! I usually only have symptoms when something is really bothering me. You say only two sessions of hypnosis? That would be incredible! I would give anything to feel some kind of relief. I feel like I want to crawl right out of my skin. Like there is no escaping the pain. It is just awful. It seems bad to say, but when someone (like my husband) asks me what's wrong, I want to punch him....How can he not know? I have two fingers on my jaw hinge and rubbing like a maniac, rocking back and forth like a complete lunatic and I am holding my jaw, trying not to scream, sitting down, standing up, laying down, pacing the floor, kicking my legs, and that quickly too. It's just plain horrible. Maybe I just have a super low tolerance for pain - although I DID have three kids - and two at once even!!

Hypnosis - - I'm IN!! I'll let you know how it goes for me - I am on a mission to find one now - a good one too....

thanks,

Jenna
