Sideways Hello...it's nice to be here. My name is Cathy. I have had HS since I was 10, after I fell down the stairs with a bowl of apples. It all started on my tailbone to which I just recently had surgery on in January. Other areas that have been affected are both sides of my groin, and inner and outer labia.

I am pretty much managing the pain, but do get some much needed help from Vicodin once a week or so. My areas used to get really inflamed 2 weeks before my menstrual cycle, and I am feeling that right now. Even though I am unsure if I will get it this month...Tamoxifen has screwed up my cycle. Whistling I try not to let my HS stop me. I still travel, go to movies, the casino, tag sales, and wander through museums, etc. I refuse to let HS kick me too my grave before I say so. Smile So hang in there everyone...it's a long way up the mountain...but there has to be some valley we can take a rest in. And a rest, from our HS.

Hi Cathy, you mentioned Casino? Where are you from? I live in Las Vegas right now but I am orgiginally from Oregon (close to where Karen lives now). You have an excellent attitude. I felt the same way this weekend and by using some aids (Dermoplast pain relieving spray, hibiclenze whipes, body powder, instant cold packs and instant warm packs) I was able to enjoy Sea World with my hubby and grandaughter. If there is a will -- there is a way!!! Glad to have you with us.

Thanks. Smile I live in Connecticut. We have two casinos here: Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun....

We have been to Las Vegas many times and loved it. Thanks. Smile I have always been a happy-go-lucky person, and try very hard not to let this disease get in the way of my life. I am glad you were able to enjoy Sea World...You go girl!

Hi Cathy Smile WElcome! I love your attitude too. We can't let this crumby disease run our lives.

Sometimes it gets to a point that it's all you can do to get through the day. When that happene to me, i finally asked my dr. to please find a way to help me get the apocrine glands and tracts and lesions removed. He said ok, I can do that. Laughing Well he got me all prepped on the scheduled day, and it was so much worse even by then, he too one look and decided it was way beyond his skill level. He called a surgeon friend and asked him if he would do the surgery.

Now, this was in 2000 and even less was known about HS. But the surgeon did his best, and I was basically HS flare free for almost 4 years. I would do it again right now, but Medicare doesn't deem HS debilitating enough to warrant coverage. Sheesh!

So now I just do what I can with my home remedy regimine and an occasional antibiotic for secondary infection and I live a pretty good life. I do know that others have much worse cases than I, and it is much harder for them to keep a stiff upper lip. We are all different.

Keep up the good outlook, but if you need treatment above what you are doing, don't hesitate to see a dermy who does HS surgery, or contact the HS Institute about the mew laser surgery.

I look forward to getting to know you! Smile Karen

Thanks friend. I am getting ready for my trip to Rhode Island and Cape Cod on Saturday. I am ready to hit the beaches! Smile I have yet to find a dermatologist here that deals with HS...my dermatologist is clueless. I am not ready for that laser surgery...but I know, I will never give up on life...Thanks for the support.

Oh, forgot to say, the HS Institute offers traditional surgery and other treatments when it laser isn't needed.

Hello Cathy & welcome to our little family! Laughing I also love your positive attitude & it's something that we must have to not let this disease get the best of us!

SOo how is the weather up North? I am jealous because I know that even with your rough winter's, your summer's have to be more mild than ours here in Oklahoma. The heat & humidity are enough to make you want to pass out-let alone entice a new flare-up to form...ugh. I am trying to convince my husband to move more North... I am picturing Colorado mountains or somewhere with a "dry" heat so I am not dripping in sweat the moment that I walk outside. Not to mention that I am currently pregnant & in my 3rd trimester so that does not help one bit that I am HUGE in the hottest part of the year.. yeah I did not plan this out very well-ha! W00t Anyway, welcome to our group- we are so pleased that you have found us! <3 Candace

I will take your advice & NOT come to Conneticut! Laughing But, I am certain that there has to be a place that is better & cooler than Oklahoma. Today's "high" temperature is 109 and that does not include the heat index. AKA it's going to be miserable! Between HS & being 31 weeks pregnant... I am not sure if I am going to survive this sumemr! AGGGHHHH! <3 Candace
