Hi i just joined this site and wanted to say hello.

I have probably a silly question. i havent been back to the doctors to check my level in maybe 1 1/2 to 2 years (i know stupid) i have had this for maybe 4 years now and the last time i had bloodwork done , it was still active and i guess progressing, if thats what you would say. I do not have health insurance but i was wondering if i were to do treatment, what should i expect? i am scared to lose my hair and be real sick. That is why i turned it down before. I guess i didnt want people to ask me what was happening....sounds stupid now i guess....i would appreciate anyone to help me...thank you

Hi annoying! I just joined too. I was told by my doc yesterday that the treatment I have done has probably stopped the progression of the disease the past ten years. I was on treatment 4x. It was difficult, but I got through it and I will go back on when necessary. I had bad short term memory problems and fatigue, irritability (so xanex helped and so did an antidepressant), and my hair thinned, but didn't drop out. It was definately worth it even thought the virus came back after tx. I will go back on it probably next year after I lose weight. My doc says I will probably get rid of the virus with the interferon if I lose weight.

I went on a researdch protocol the forst time I ws on treatment, so I didn't have to have medical ins. I am lucky though that I have great med. ins. and disability from work. There are companies that do research and will notify you online if they have a protocol near you. I think one is called Medwatch.

Hang in there. This dragon we fight is formadible, but has its weaknesses. We have to have hope and hang on.

By the way, the virus doesn't progress in everyone. A lot of people have Hep C and never develop liver disease. I hope you get back to your doc and get tested regularly.

I just found out I don't have cirrhosis!!! A doc told me I did about 10 years aqgo---a surgeon who did a biopsy while taking out my gall bladder--but I saw my liver doc yesterday and he said I couldn't, because if I had cirrhosis I would be at end stage by now. Hallelujah!!! I still have to have another biopsy to see if there is a lot of fibrosis.
Anyway I have had hep c about 40 years. I have been on interferon about 3x and infergen once. The virus clears, but comes back. I am doing well, working at two jobs and singing in my church choir. I have two grandchildren and two dogs and two cats...

I can tell you what to expect without tx. I've had hep C for 20 to 30 years, 2 years ago I nearly died, I had no idea I was so sick. I was then diagnosed with Hep C and end stage liver disease. I rationalized every symptom, beat myself up for being so tired and forgetting everything. I was working on Thursday and dying on Saturday. I haven't been able to return to work, I've lost my insurance, and my treatment will be transplant. You are so fortunate to know before things can't be stopped or changed. Don't be afraid of what ever the treatment is, in the end, untreated, it's life or death.

I'm sorry if this sounds harsh but I also beat myself up for being so STUPID and not responding to what my body was trying to tell me for all those years by going to a doctor at all.

I am very fortunate to have had a great dr., so that's why I have followed through in the past.

A lot of people do ignore symptoms because people think they are at fault for getting sick. I think the first reaction most people have is to feel guilty for something they really couldn't control. How many people eat the right diet, exercise, see their doctors regularly, etc.? Not many. How many of us got HCV through ways we never thought would infect us? Then when we get sick we blame ourselves. Or, as you say, we think our fatigue is just laziness, our memory problems as age, etc.

I hope you have a successful liver transplant. I have a friend who got one and he feels great and is back at work.

My dr. told me I need a new biopsy...the last one ws 12 years ago. Then we will see if I need tx. again.

thank you ...i know you are right. i guess i always think im fine so this is my problem..i once spent every other night for about a month crawling on the floor in pain for maybe 3-4 hours and convinced myself it was just heartburn or something and didnt wanna bother anyone by going to the hospital, here i finally went to the doctors and he laughed at me and said go over and get an ultrasound, my gallbladder was full of stones and had to be removed!! i will never understand myself and i know that it will be better for me to just do soemthing now rather than later no matter what the outcome. thank you so much....
