MDJunction to me

"All I can say is that this has been the best place ever. It has been six to seven months since I joined, and I have learned so much. I now believe in myself and accept myself on a completely different level. The people on MDJunction has been so supportive and accepting that I have been able to adopt it into my personal life. That has reduced a lot of stress in my life. Thanks to all." (bunny_fly)

As you may or may not know, I had been experiencing slight dizzy spells over the last month or more, but they were fleeting and I didn't pay attention to them. Then on June 29 I had a BIG dizzy spell which sent me to my bed for 3 whole days. To naviagate to the bathroom or kitchen for necessary duties (pun intended), I had to literally grab onto furniture and the walls, etc. I did upchuck one day with just a sip of water trying to take my meds. During this attack I had a clogged up left ear thinking it was a wax build up as I have had it happen in there once before as well as the right one once. So I did the 4 day treatment with OTC product called OTIX. On Day 4 I got the biggest lump of a wax plug out and was so happy, but to my dismay it did not relieve my total hearing loss in the left ear. So I have an appointment this coming Tuesday with an ENT specialist.

In the meantime, what I do hear in the left ear is tinny whirry sounds like a busted PA system's speaker or the bad speakers in a drive-thru fast food place. Not distinguishable at all. It has improved "slightly" over the last week but not to the point where I could understand a conversation or watch TV with ease.

I am so worried that my left ear is going to be totally disabled. I can't afford a hearing aid right now and am thankful that my right ear is still functioning. The volume of the tinny sounds in left ear is very very very low. I don't even think at this time that a hearing aid would help as who wants amplified tinny sounds??

What do you think could have happened so suddenly? Could I have perforated the eardrum when doing the syringe part of the wax removal treatment? Will that heal over time?

I'm so worried as it is like having only one kidney or one lung. I don't want to be totally deaf. OMIGOSH I am so very worried.

Comments, suggestions, just comforting talk would be appreciated.

I am glad to see that you are going to an ENT. They will probably have you have a hearing test done and maybe other medical tests (bloodwork, etc.).

I am so worried that my left ear is going to be totally disabled. I can't afford a hearing aid right now and am thankful that my right ear is still functioning. A sudden hearing loss, as you have described, can be very frightening as well as unpredictable. There is no way to figure out if your hearing loss will go away or will stay with you.

Depending on how the ENT typically treats sudden hearing loss, will determine the amount of time that you go through testing/evaluation and tracking of the loss over time.

What do you think could have happened so suddenly?

The best that one can tell you is that sudden hearing loss is just that, sudden. There are several things that can cause a sudden hearing loss (I will post an article today about that - go to "Hearing Loss Articles" and look for "Sudden Hearing Loss" - in about an hour or so - it is 8:30am California time now - ).

Could I have perforated the eardrum when doing the syringe part of the wax removal treatment?

Based on what you told me, in your post, it sounds like you did the wax removal during or after your episode with vertigo. If that is correct, then it had nothing to do with the onset of the vertigo and hearing loss. It may have added to it (if you perforated your eardrum). However, if your eardrum were perforated, you would be in excruciating pain right now.

Will that heal over time?

An eardrum perforation can heal. However, each person is different and it depends on their healing capacity. For example, my twins both had tubes placed nearly 3 years ago (which is a perforation in the eardrum if you think about it). We recently took them to the ENT to check on the status and he told us that if they are not out of their eardrums, and healed, the boys will have to go in for a tympanoplasty (patching of the hole in the eardrum).

When asked if there is anything we can do to help the healing process. The ENT told us it is all dependent on the child's healing abilities.

I'm so worried as it is like having only one kidney or one lung. I don't want to be totally deaf. OMIGOSH I am so very worried.

Do not panic. You have done the right thing in seeking out knowledge and medical care. Allow the ENT to figure things out and give you answers.

I am always here. (except when I am sleeping ).
