There are many types of thyroid disease and many are hereditary. You should mention to your health care provider that you know of a family history of thyroid conditions and let him/her question you regarding clinical signs and symptoms. If you present with any symptoms of thyroid conditions then most likely they will order a simple blood test that will help them determine if your thyroid gland is working correctly. Since the thyroid gland is responsible for making thyroid hormone for your body/blood stream and keeping many systems in proper working order than a blood test is the proper way to determine if it is functioning well or not. Good luck! Keep in mind that just because there is a family history of a condition, does not mean that you will get it but it is always important to let your physician know your history. |
