Why wear a ribbon?

MDJunction to me

"MDJunction to me has been the helping friends of understanding that I have needed. I feel now as if someone else it the world understands the things that I am going through. I feel less alone and happier. Here I can let out all my emotions and get support from many people who have been in similar situations. It really has been a life saver for me!" (Amanda78)

I can't believe that there is not a specific forum topic at this site for Hepatitis C! I hope that they open one soon. It is the most common chronic blood borne virus in the United States today and almost 5 million people have it though 4 million are not even aware that they do. We outnumber HIV patients 5 to 1. You need to be TESTED for Hepatitis C if you:

* received a blood transfusion or solid organ transplant before July 1992

* were notified that you received blood from a donor who later tested positive for hepatitis C.

* have ever injected illegal drugs, even if you experimented only one time many years ago (or snorted any drugs)

* were a recipient of clotting factor(s) made before 1987

* have ever been on long-term kidney dialysis

* have had tattoos or body piercings

* had sexual activity that involved contact with blood

* have had vaccinations administered with pneumatic jet injectors

* are a combat veteran

* have shared razors, toothbrushes, nail clippers, tweezers, etc. with an infected person

* are a health care worker exposed to needle sticks or first responders

* have ever been incarcerated

* also 5%-10% of babies born to infected mothers will get Hepatitis C

Please educate yourselves about this very important topic. There are vaccines for Hepatitis A and B. There is not a vaccine for Hepatitis C.

Peace

Pam

Hi Pam,

thanks for sharing that.

in a few weeks, we'll air new support groups.

do you think there's a need for a Hepatitis support group?

does anyone else?

thanks,

roy

btw - if you have an idea for another support group, I'd like to hear it too

Hi Roy. I guess it all depends on just exactly what the goal of your site is. If you are looking to support people with various diseases then I do see a need for a Hepatitis section as well as an HIV section and an STD section. Those are three SEPARATE issues but there are a great number of people in those categories that are always seeking support. There are Hep C support groups all over the internet already but a name like MDJunction indicates that most diseases will be covered and when I first got here and saw pregnancy, acne, back disorders, etc. and no Hepatitis........ well it gave me pause 1 million people are already dealing with this disease and hopefully the other 4 million will find out they have it in 2007 and will be looking for support as well. Should they surf through this site....... there should be a section for them. It is just a thought and again...... our ribbons are red and yellow (for blood and jaundice) and though transplants are also a great issue for us and the green ribbon is an option - not all Hep C patients will ever progress to that stage so they would want a red and yellow ribbon to wear and not a green one. Again, it just all depends on what you are trying to accomplish with your site. I tend to stay with Yahoo Hep C groups because they come in emails and I don't have to come to a website but I do know that WebMD has a Hepatitis section. Actually they have two sections. One for Hepatitis A and B and a separate one for Hepatitis C. Here are a couple of other Hepatitis Groups below my LONG sig I don't use that one often.

Hi Pam,

You’ll be happy to know that we’ve added the yellow / red awareness ribbon (as you asked).

You can wear it with pride.

Sincerely,

roy

Thank you Roy! I will go and get mine right away I will repost the information to this site to all my Yahoo groups. Perhaps that will get a bit of traffic for you but as I mentioned there are ALOT of Hepatitis C groups already out there. I never have figured out why some get going strong and others don't. Anyway, I will resend the info and I hope that lots of people drop by here Thank you again and take care!

Peace

Pam
