When dealing with fibro and/or lupus have you found that you hurt more than what would seem reasonable? Sometimes, I'll get a papercut or something small and it will feel like I've been stabbed by a hot poker. Recently, broke my toes and they hurt like something awful and the pain meds are just tickling them. I feel like such a wimp, but they really hurt and every time I get hurt I HURT. What should I be doing to help myself get over this without excessive drugs?

I have Fibro and to say that I "hurt more than what would seem reasonable" is an understatement. I will say that, after reading a lot of posts from other members here, the pain I have on a daily basis could be worse. The pain is actually my second biggest complaint. My first would be the constant lack of energy. I tried explaining it to my family one day and the best comparison I could come up with is a rag doll. That's what I feel like almost every day. A limp, lifeless rag doll that isn't strong enough to hold up her own head.

As for injuries being more painful than what you would think they should be, yes, I definitely have that problem. I've had people poke me in my upper arms just to get my attention and I damn near broke down in tears. I've broken a lot of bones and I always found ice to be helpful. I always continued using the ice for several weeks, even after being in a cast. You might even want to try heat instead of the ice. One of my doctors recommended that, but the ice always worked better for me.

I've broken both my knees (not at the same time thank God), an ankle, and a foot and the only thing I can recommend for anything like that is staying off your feet as much as possible. Anything in that area is so much worse than an arm or hand because you're constantly putting weight on it. And if you're not, you're putting weight on your other leg and then even your good leg winds up killing you! It's really a lose-lose situation.

I wish I could give you more help but hopefully someone here will have some better advice for you. Hope you're feeling better soon!

[b]Hi hon, a doctor that I have coming to see me at home tried to explain to me how the medical profession is coming along with learning about fibro more than they did when I was diagnosed. As you have explained that sometimes a papercut seems excessive and maybe it is if it were a person without fibro. What he said is that people like us experience pain or maybe things other than pain in bigger way. I don't like the word exaggerated because to us it is not exaggerated. Our bodies and cells in our bodies have become very sensitive. That is a better way of putting this. So with this increased sensitivity sometimes becomes increased pain. I know loud noises bother me now than they ever did. I have some hearing loss, but my hubby said my hearing sometimes is too good I still jump when I hear a loud noise.

As for your question about the pain. I know that it can be worse. I seem to have ups and downs in pain. My pain levels do get very high and a very rare to get under a 5 on a daily basis. I don't like pain scales very much.

I know bubble suggested ice or heat. I think ice for me works much better. I have felt if you froze me from the mid back down I would feel better...not possible huh...lol.

I know you recently said you broke your toes. I know when I had the bone infection in my finger (it was also in my shoulder and we were working on a diagnosis)it got me to the hospital to figure out what could hurt a finger so bad. FYI: the finger and toes have a lot of nerve endings and when hurt seem to hurt worse than other body parts together. I was told that and it help may be feel better a little

Hugs and Prayers For A Better Pain Day,

Dr. Patty
