Didn't see anything about this anywhere else...

For about a month and a half, I've been under the impression that my iron level is low. I had been noticing a lot more hair in the drain when I washed my hair, and much more hair in my hairbrush, so I went to my PCP to have an iron test. A different doc in the practice read the results, and said that my iron level was fine.

I still went to the dermatologist because I was concerned. She had the doctors office fax a copy of the results, and said that my iron level was kinda low - 17. For healthy hair, it should be around 50. Now, apparently, it turns out that she should have said "ferretin level", not "iron level". I just had my iron checked yesterday, and my FERRETIN is 20 (normal 12-150) and IRON is 133 (normal 37-170).

So, my ferretin level is still clearly low, but my iron seems okay. Is there anyone who knows anything about the differences between these two numbers? I understand that the ferretin is a protein that STORES iron... but am just curious to see if anyone can explain anything else.

Thank you

Joanna, ferritin, as you said, is a protein that iron is bound to and serves as an iron storage form. When it runs low, that means that your body doesn't have much iron supplies left, but the release of iron in the blood can still be normal (not for long, though), if the mechanism is working correctly. You should be on iron supplements (did your doctor mention anything about it?) to avoid your iron release going under normal. So far, just the reserves are low, but your body still gets the necessary amount (or a normal amount, in any case) released in the blood, very roughly explained.

Thanks for that explanation... neither my regular physician nor my dermatologist (who I went to about my hair falling out) had really explained the difference between ferretin and iron at all. I have been taking an iron supplement for a few months now, and my iron count is/has been in an OK range. Apparently though, my regular doc still thinks the ferritin is low. It's just weird to think that even though you say the ferritin[i] runs low, it means that the iron supply is low... very interesting. I'm still working on it, but was glad to see that someone had comments on it Thanks again!
