Although I had many health problems in my time, my back has always been fine. Until around a week ago, when I suddenly felt a sharp, terribly powerful pain in my lower back and my movement ability got seriously impaired ever since.

I can barely get up when I sit or lie down, and I walk with difficulty, although it gets a little better after longer walks. The worst is in the morning, or after longer periods without any movement. I need help to get out of the car, I can't even lift a few hundred grams (when I try to lift something, I feel it straight in my spine), the pain sometimes descends along the legs (both of them), on the whole, it's a terrible condition, and no medication I took really improved my situation.

The diagnosis was 'sciatic neuralgia' and the medication consists mostly of anti-inflammatories and pain killers.

I really can't understand why I suddenly became so unwell, especially since I didn't strain myself, nor did any sudden movements, it was all out of the blue, totally sudden, as I was in the kitchen, ready to have lunch.

Anybody ever confronted with this kind of problem?

I may be way off here, but... did you happen to have had a cold (especially accompanied by coughing) shortly before your back problems occurred?

Funny you should ask that -- yes, in the matter of fact, I did have a bronchitis attack, with heavy caughing. It started three weeks ago, and I'm still not fully recovered. I suffer from chronic bronchitis.

It wasn't a random question… The coughing effort exerts a high pressure on the spine, and may cause displacement of the vertebrae or disk herniation the same way carrying heavy items could. Since you weren't aware of exerting your back particularly much before you started having the problems, it may have been something less obvious. You may not notice it, and even your doctor may not pick it up, but heavy, prolonged coughing can lead to severe back pain, especially in the lumbar area, due to the exertion on the spinal cord.

Having a similar problem some time ago, muscle relaxants (along with the anti-inflammatory) medication, brought some relief to me. Maybe you should ask your doctor about it, if you're not already on muscle relaxant drugs.

I hope this helps. Best of health to you, and get better soon.
