Hi. First time posting here. Everyone seems nice. I'm 46, female, with adult onset of scoliosis, DDD and back/Rt.leg pain for about 4 years. The most recent doc said I have a "little scoliosis and mild DDD" but no disc hernation or stenosis (per MRI scan) so he said I shouldn't be in pain. So why am I then?

Does anyone get the feeling their doctors don't believe them when they say they are in pain? So, I guess they've concluded I am either stupid or crazy. With all the modern diagnostic equipment that exists these days, you would think they would find a reason for my pain and treat it. And if modern diagnostic equipment can't pinpoint a signficant cause of my pain, then is it psychological? I've tried making it go away and can't. Just venting. Thanks.

Hi there. You are so young for this, any idea what triggered such a rich display of usually old-age problems?

I know exactly what you're saying. I've had a bad case of peritonitis that they didn't find in time (I could have died then) and every time I told my doctor how much I pain I am, he said there's no reason to be in pain and it's only in my head, he even gave me some antidepressants...

They found it when it almost was too late, and I was rushed to surgery. He never even apologized. The only thing I could do about it was change doctors... Do you think that is an option for you?

If the modern diagnostic equipment can't pintpoint a cause of your pain, it doesn't mean that it's necessarily psychological - it means that they just can't pinpoint the cause.

But describe the type of pain a little - is it back and leg together? Is it permanent or set off by triggers (cold, effort, position)? Is it dull or sharp?

A rudimentary way of finding out if it's psychological or not is to observe whether it hurts more when you're thinking or talking about it, and, in the "ease" periods, if remembering about it makes it grow.

And there is also "idiopathic pain", which they should have diagnosed you already with - that means that have no idea where it comes from, but they acknowledge it.

And lastly, what investigations you underwent?

Hi Jenny. Thanks for the reply. I had an MRI last year which showed lumbar scoliosis and an annular disc tear which my pain doc said "should have healed by now". The pain is a dull deep ache from mostly in my right hip and thigh and runs down my leg. I ballroom dance and go to the gym 3 times a week so strength is not an issue. When I am walking, for short periods, I am fine. But standing around, sitting or car trips kill me. I am usually not in pain when I wake up either but after about an hour or so, I am just dragging. So...I don't know what to think.

This sounds like siatica pain or possible disc degeneration. Go to a different spine doc and if you can have new MRI's done it maybe necessary to get new ones to determine if damage is still there or not.

Hi. I'm seeing a sports and rehab medicine doctor in addition to pain management and after reading 2 MRI's and xrays it is confirmed that it is spondylosis. The pain is a dull deep ache that is sometimes so bad during the day, it makes me feel horrible. This is very common in older athletes. (I have been dancing since I was 14 and figure skated for a while in my 30's--quit after a bad fall). I've always been very active, raised kids, worked as a nurse on a surgical unit for several years way back. No telling what all this has done to contribute. Anyway, it's nice to know this is not all in my head. Yes, I'm young for arthritis at 46 but then, my spine and joints are just worn out. I am fairly comfortable now with my regimen which includes PT 3 times a week with strength training, muscle relaxers and pain medications to get through painful days.

I feel you guys on the pain issue......I went around and around in circles for months with a Rheumatologist (who I gave a not so great review) who I felt was disbelieving with tips like----just go exercise----when I could barely walk---at the time, for pain. Assuming because I'm young 30 at the time (31 now)....it was nothing.

I believe the nortryptiline...which is often used for pain in fibromyalgia patients as well.....thus, perhaps it just works for pain in general did help. Also, going organic helped.....getting toxins out of my body....somehow that makes pain worse I believed.... I read about it in a natural book written by a MD who writes about healing of auto-immune diseases.... and I got much better....going completely organic (food, cleaning supplies, no makeup except an organic lipstick found online) and staying on the nortryptilene....

But, I know how you feel about others not understanding....I'm not sure my family even completely got it...and I had a baby/toddler to care for who would crawl around while I had to lay on the couch. At times it was *SO BAD* that I remember making a bottle felt like an enormous ordeal... When I look back on that period I think....gee....I was in a *LOT* of pain if making one bottle....felt like an ordeal....that much pain and that exhausting....

Thus, I know that a lot of pain/exhaustion *IS REAL*....I was there....and though I'm a lot better....I'm still not always 100% to par...and have a little fatigue...though once I got better I did get into a regular exercise program as well....which I do believe helps...

GeorginaT----has anyone thought of fibromyalgia----that numbness/pain allover?---- then the similar treatment I got maybe could work for you? nortryptiline and going organic--- I think I had fibro from talking to others though the rheumatologist just tossed it around and the anesthesiologist descided I had some muscle pain condition.... But I looked it up and I had every symptom of fibro....even pain with sex...*sigh*

I am new to this web-site but I'm not new to this subject. Last year I was tusked in the leg by a hog. Even though the wound healed the pain didn't. I think the doctors hear us well, they just don't know what to do with us. It took me alot of doctors to find one that actually had a name for my type of pain, RSD. I already had the 3 series of Lumbar Epidural Injections and each time I only had a week of relief. Then I was given the Spinal Cord Stimulator. It was a weird feeling but it helped a little as well. In a couple of weeks I'm gonna get the SCS Implant. I'm hoping it will work. Some days I feel good and I must be crazy, then other days it hurts so bad it makes me crazy. For the longest time I thought I was the only one going through this, but now I know I am not alone. Hang in there, I'm praying for ya.

I have been going through the same thing as you, except I have a protruding disk in the lumbar region. I have been through pain management, 3 epidurals and 1 facet injection with no help. I went to a neurosurgeon and orthopedic surgeon who looked at my mri's and said they couldn't help me. I was so desperate from the pain I asked for an appt with the pain mgmt dr. and laid it on the line with him, that I can't stand the pain any longer. He did a diskogram and found three bad disks. He said the mri's would not show the damage. So keep pushing your dr. and don't give up. I don't know what he will do with my disk problem yet but it's a relief to find what's causing the pain. The pain is a burning, searing pain and goes down into my legs. Good luck.
