Hi im a grandmother of a 3 year old girl diagnosed with GBS about 2 months ago. It was a traumatic time for her, she was so brave with all the tests involved the the diagnosis and treatment thenafter. Thanks to the fantastic doctors in the North Tees General Hospital and Newcastle General for their speedy diagnosis. We would love to hear from anyone that can help us understand her discomfort in order to make her more comfortable. She is still very weak on her legs but we do think there is definately improvement in the last month. Although she never complains during the day she says she is itchy? at night and often wakes up throwing her legs about and appears aggitated. Im not sure what she means by itchy? from reading a lot about this could it be pins and needles or cramp? we just dont know. Any insite to what we can do or advice would be dearly appreciated. Best wishes to you all. Sandie

I had similar pain in my legs at night. The only thing that I suggest is that my parents bought me a heating pad and that seemed to help a little bit with the nightly pains... best of luck

One reason for the itchy feeling is as the nerves try to work again you feel it in your legs. It feels like there is something is crawling around inside your legs. Time will take care of it and your granddaughter is very brave. It has been 8 months and I still get what she calls the itchy feeling. I was told I had GBS 8 months ago today and it is a horrible thing to go through. I know how your granddaughter feels and I wish her a speedy recovery. It is hard to explain to people what you are feeling inside especially since she is so young. Her legs will feel weak for a while and as she rebuilds her muscles and recovers. Time is what you need with GBS and a whole lot of patience and love. GBS is hard on the body and the mind and frustration is common but she will prevail.

My heart goes out to you and your little grand daughter and your family. GBS is bad enough for an adult, but for a child, I just can't imagine. I read the other replies and they offered good advice. All I can say from my own experience and this may not be the same in your grand daughter's case, but my legs after I had had GBS for several months began at night to seem to have a severe form of restless leg syndrome. I had mild restless leg syndrome before GBS, and kept putting off calling the neurologist when this more intense feeling occured in my legs. My legs would actually twist inwards and my toes would curl inward also. The strange part was only one leg at a time would do this. The neurologist said the nerves were firing in all directions and prescribed the generic drug pabapentin, which helped a lot. I'm sure this can be prescribed for children as it is also for seizures. But hopefully, her leg thrashing may be what the other replies referred to and can be taken care of in a less drastic measure. Best of luck for her!
