I have been on valtrex for a year and 2 months. My doctor originally said she wanted me to take it for the frist year as suppressive therapy. Now she is telling me she wants me to take it for a 2nd year since I am having breakouts once in a while. She said if I can go 6 months without an outbreak thats when I can stop taking it. And then only take it when an outbreak occurs. What did you do with your meds??

Please for God's sake, don't ruin yourselves. these medicines are not the solution, besides your psychology is the biggest remedy..think over it.

Totally agree with sarah135. I am under a program that helped me limit my outbreaks. As I have shared before, I used to have obs one after the other and this program taught me that stress is one factor which may have caused it. Now, I don't have obs anymore.

I have type 1 but genital its really strange so they thought they would be able to get it to get the virus to go dormant if I took valtrex for 1 year and I did but still had break outs so I've been on it for about 2-3 years. If I could try and lead a less stressful like I would but im about to throw myself back into more. I wouldn't change it for the world..

The one thing to help with the outbreaks is to limit stress. I was diagnosed with Type 2 back in June or July last year. I may have had herpes longer than that, but didn't know it. One of the things that I've found is that to limit outbreaks, you must eliminate the stress in your life. Once you minimize the stress that will help with the outbreaks. I was told by my doctor to only take outbreaks 3 times a day for 3 days at the sign of an outbreak Normally, I can get away with taking it for a day, then the outbreak is gone. It may also depend on what medication your doctor has you on as wel. I'm taking Valtrex and that seems to be okay.
