Hi I'm Erin and I'm new to this group. I'm about one month post-op and feel like I'm not getting anything right. I am looking for ideas for foods that are high in protien. My Doc says I should be getting 80g per day and I am struggling to get there. Also, I don't feel like I'm loosing the weight as quickly as I thought. I'm down 22lbs but I honestly thought at one month out it would be more. Any thoughts or input will be greatly appreciated. Smile --Erin

Hi Erin,

Firstly, welcome to the group. You have taken a first step into a nice, friendly and caring forum here, I am pleased to meet you. The good thing about this forum is that we're all at different stages, and you get to hear different idea's and thoughts from people who have done this, some a few months ago and others a little longer.

22lb is a very good start. A lot of patients don't lose anything like that much in the first month, which is always well known to be the slowest month after surgery. I had surgery nearly 22 months ago and I lost about 7lb in my first month. If you have lost that much in the first month, then it's a good sign, as the loss always increases as you get into the next month.

Try not to have unrealistic expectations, and just think how much 22lb is! It is a lot of weight! Could you ever imagine losing that much before surgery?

Protein is hard only a month after, if you try and eat some things, it will probably make you ill. eggs are a good source of protein and I used to eat the soft yolks in a boiled egg to help keep my levels higher. I couldn't eat any meat at all for 6 months after surgery, as it made me feel so ill.

There are some eating plans stickied on the forum, so have a read through and you might get some idea's.

Hi my name is Mary I had my bypass on July 22. I read your post and wanted to tell you your doing great!!! I didn't lose that much my first month so don't get down (I know its super hard) I also spent the first month crying at the drop of a hat so if your felling that too it DOES go away. As for foods that have high protine buy some profect protine bars they actually taste good have not too bad carbs and great protine.
I can be your friend, I can be your confidant, we could be like blood in closeness. But i CANNOT be you. you must make your own decisions. some will be good, some will be bad. but I will never leave until you push me away.

welbutrin 100mg 3x daily abilify 30mg once daily
cymbalta 120mg once daily Lamictal 150mg
benedryl 50mg once daily Thyroid Neurontin calcium
fish oil vitamin E lorazapam as needed 1mg
advair 50/500 twice daily accolate 20mg twice daily B12 once daily one dropper

I buy me a Protein smoothie every day. They put an extra scoop of the powder in it...It is 50g of protein. You can but the powder in any health food store. the people I go to ordered me the stuff they make me, and are going to teach me how to make them at home (save money). I find it super easy to drink the entire thing, and it is really satisfying! Gl!!

Hi, I don't know where you live but here in the US we have Walmart that carries a brand of protein powder that has 54gr of protein per serving; I use to add that to a Boost low glucose drink. It gave me over 65 gr of protein, which is the minimum I was supposed to get (according to my doc) otherwise, I would be eating yogurt, eggs, cottage cheese. I never had a problem getting my protein in that way. There are also protein waters to help you along. Good luck.

Good advice here people Smile I am always proud and impressed how we all help each other Smile

I will admit, yet again, I am not a fan of artificial protein, they don't even suggest those protein bars or shakes here after surgery, and push us to get it from food instead. I think as a back up, you could use them, but try and add little extra protein sources in food if you can. The body absorbs it a lot better
