Hello,

I am the mother of a 4 year old boy who has a severe peanut allergy. I am suffering from extreme anxiety, stress & worry. I am also faced with some family members that are not so understanding of his allergy. I am looking for advice, information or feedback from anyone that is going through a similar situation. This seems to be so overwhelming and it effecting every aspect of my life and my families lives.

Please contact me .

Thanks

Heather

Hi Heather, I don't have as much advice or information for you as I wish I did, my allergies did not really develop until later and mine are not as severe as your son's. I know there are a lot of parents who are in your position though.

Has your doctor given you any kind of emergency medications or procedures? I have an epi-pen that I keep with me in case I have a severe reaction. I think they make them with child sized doses as well, though I am not sure of that. I expect that an auto injection kit could be useful in helping family memebers get an idea of how serious this is. Maybe sit whoever it is down and say that since he is only four you need to make sure that all the adults that might be in charge of him know how to use this in case he ever comes in contact with peanuts, then show them how...at least mine has a pretty scary needle spring loaded on it. So far I have never actually had to use it, but I have one.

I am sure it seems terribly overwhelming, especially if this is something that you recently found out. If you have to look at it as just for today, and hopefully that way it won't be quite as overwhelming. You may have to keep telling some relatives over and over and some may never seem to get it, but you do the best you can. I hope this helps some. I wish I had more resources for you. I am sure they are out there somewhere online, but I am not sure where exactly.

Well, I have a friend who is a severe allergic to peanut butter, she swells up and gets different reactions to it. I had order a butterfinger shake, and she could not eat in front of me cause she kept staring at the glass, so basically I had to hide the shake for her to eat lunch. She has told me about her allergic reactions and I have seen that side, in which I don't like seeing her in that situation. As a friend, I prefer someone to just go clean and tell me what to do and what not.

I am no mother, but at your state, you may worry because this is a 4 year old we are talking about. Get the family members to understand the ordeal, and to know what might 'could' happen if he ate peanut. What would happen to him, assuming (what if). People have to understand that you need to know the fact of something other than ignoring the situation that the child might end up in the hospital room, due to lack of communication of the household.

Check all foods that are made or given of peanuts; if contained with peanuts do NOT allow that child to reach and put it in its mouth.
